Default Nearly 40 guns stolen from shooting range

http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/10/11...shooting-range

Quote:
Police are on the hunt for at least 30 firearms stolen from a Calgary shooting , now presumably in the hands of criminals who are in the crosshairs of investigators.

And they are appealing to the public for help finding culprits or weapons swiped during the break-in at the Calgary Shooting Centre, in the 7100 block of Fisher Rd. S.E., about 4 a.m. Thursday.

Insp. Patty McCallum said suspects “smashed several display cases and removed a number of firearms.”

They were properly stored, said McCallum, who could not comment on whether the culprits — there are believed to be three — had ammunition among their ill-gotten loot.
Properly stored is having them in glass cases? Maybe they should lock up their guns in safes before they close.

Who knows where these guns end up.

I will take the word of the police. Perhaps the weapons had the firing mechanisms disabled removed.

Regardless, this is not a very good event.

Does anyone know how many ranges there are like this in the city?

Not sure about restricted guns but it is legal to store non-restricted guns behind glass as long as they are locked up. Ammo can be out.

Canada's safe-gun storage laws are ambiguous on purpose.

There's no clear definition of what safe storage and 'locked' means.

That's scary no matter what side of the gun platform you're on. I hope they get these weapons before they are used in a crime.

Thanks.

It was shooting edge that had the two suicides wasn't it?

2?? Wow, I was only aware of one and yes, that was the The Shooting Edge. Talked to the range officer that witnessed it too, poor #######. No one should have to see something like that.

Yeah I thought there was one in 09 and 10.

Trust me you never eraser the sight of a shot up body.

Very sad.

The building was locked. That's all code really dictates, although as already pointed out, the codes are rather ambiguous.

I suppose you could call it a room that is not easy to break into, seeing as how they used a truck to bend the bars to get in.

For Retricteds, they must be disabled as well as per your quote.

Safe storage is ridiculous in Canada. I read a story once where a guy bought a full on gun safe, not just a gun cabinet, for his rifles. He went away one weekend and on the Friday night he left, thieves broke in a spent the entire weekend trying to get into his safe. They finally cracked it and took off with his firearms. When he got home and found what happened he called the cops right away. He was charged with unsafe storage of firearms.

Unreal.

Are you sure about that story? I know a fella that had his safe drilled open and he did not get charged.

100% sure, I read the orginal article not to long ago. I believe the charges were thrown out in court but goes to show you the police can charge you with whatever they want due to how grey gun laws are. As far as I know, there is no real good defenition of what is considered a "safe".

Good catch. I forgot about the "for display" caveat.

I belonged to a similar style club in Aus that was broken into like this.
bad part for me was that I stored my pistol there and it was among the guns stolen.
The police did catch the thief (ex employee) and my glock was returned.
I hope this incident doesn't have any long lasting effects for the centre as I am hoping to do the firearms course there soon.

The law is VERY grey.

It also puts a lot of the burden of proof on the gun owner for 'proving' to the cops after the fact that he/she had safe storage. For the record I have both my gun safes drilled into the wall. This is because criminals have been known to walk out of houses carrying the entire safe if it is locked, then dealing with it after. Police actually have charged people for unsafe storage if they manage to steal the case, no matter how large it is - you basically have to have bolts ripped out of the wall to prove that you had it secure enough.

Wouldn't it make more sense to store the guns in several different locations in safes so they can't all be swiped in one fell swoop?
