chicAgO!
to the Blackhawks:
Alexander Ovechkin (LW) NHL
Teuvo Teravainen (LW) ECHL (in 10 years will be known as the best player taken in the 2012 draft, not Mark Jankowski)
conditional 2013 2nd
2.5 Million 2012-13 season
to the Wild:
Jordan Staal (C) NHL
Dougie Hamilton (D) ECHL
Nail Yakupov (RW) ECHL
When asked about about the trade Alex responded "stupid CPHL commissioner and owners, I just want to play hockey".

Kind of disappointed to see this one go down like this. I get it's Ovie, but that return is silly.

Not sure why it is so silly. I gave up one of the best players in the game - the return has to be good.
I traded Rick Nash, Derek Stepan, a 2nd and and Bryan Little for AO and Jon Merril. I gave up a lot so I wanted a lot back.
Plus I gave up a really good prospect with AO, and 2nd rounder.
Seems OK to me.

Maybe my value is out to lunch here but I don't see Ovie as a top 3 player anymore. He has a lot of question marks, which if he answers then perhaps this deal looks different for me. I believe staal has a massive year in Carolina and the point totals,if healthy, won't be THAT far removed from Ovie. Adding a 1st overall prospect and the best defensive prospect out there to the deal just seem like an overpayment to me.
Like I said, I get that it's Ovie and he has a certain premium...I just think the price chi paid is extremely high, especially in light of other recent deals involving other #1 picks.
Just my 2 cents

Well Giroux netted RNH and Brett Connolly.
I added TT and a 2nd. So the value seems similar.
I get there are question marks on AO but take away 1 season and he still has a far more proven record than Staal.
Staal has never hit 30 goals. Last year AO had 38 in what was considered a down year. That speaks volumes about the gap at least in terms of historical performance.
Staal could break out, but at this point his offensive ceiling is unknown. We know what AO can do if he returns to form.
My primary reason for trading AO is I just don't like the guy. He's a goof. I liked the idea of having the big 3 - but never really liked having AO specifically.

I think it's an overpayment, but I understand you have to overpay to get one of the top 5 players in the game. Still, that's a lot of "A" to A+ talent going to Minny for one A+ and one B, even if he is slightly better than any of the other three.
Not a total rip off, but an overpayment nonetheless.
[EDIT]Didn't realize the 2nd was in there too, that does even it a bit more.

Love the deal for the Wild.
My view of the deal is this:
Hall + parts were traded for Spezza
RNH + Connolly were traded for Giroux (Who I value more then Ovie)
Yakupov (best forward not in the NHL)
Hamilton (best d-man not in the NHL)
Staal
for Ovie + 1st round prospect just seems off IMO.
edit: I think Yak + Hamilton is bang on good deal for both sides. Not adding Staal.

That's fair but let's keep in mind RNH is far more proven as an NHLer already than Yakupov. And frankly I like RNH way more than Yak as a first overall pick.
I would also point out that some believed that the return for Giroux was not enough.

Wish I traded giroux to the hawks... nice move for
Minny, but the hawks get who they want.

I should point out that obviously I like the deal for me - otherwise I would not have made it. However, I put him on the market knowing I would only trade him to someone that was confident that he could rebound, otherwise it would make no sense to trade him when his value was arguably at its lowest point.

I feel Ovechkin is one of the top 5 players in the game today. I can't wait to see how he plays with Parise.
If the NHL lockout lasts all season, Yakupov and Hamilton won't be in the CPHL next season. By the time they play their first game in the CPHL, the Hawks would have already won the Cup!

Staal's in Minnesota now. He'll be lucky to score 20.

That is sort of my feeling as well. In the CPHL getting back solid bluechip/NHL depth for a single superstar is always a win.

I don't think that this is too bad of a deal. I would be shocked if AO didnt het at least 50 goals this season to be honest. When a guy has 38 and that's an off year then you know he's solid. Why would you trade a guy like him if it wasn't for overpayment?
Comparing this to the Giroux deal I think AO brought in a better return, but also at this stage of the game he has higher value as well. Teravainen is also an underrated asset heading back to Chicago as well.

This is a good time to deal for Ovechkin. Yakupov is overated, Staal is a good 2nd liner at best and Hamilton will become a professor instead of a hockey player.

I might as well pipe in since I'm not with the league anymore!
J.Staal is playing #1 Centre with Eric Staal and Semin...he will achieve the same point total as AO! This is how I see the deal breakdown:
J.Staal + Hamilton --> AO + Teuvo
That seems fair. Add in Yakupov and the deal is not even close IMO.
Easy for me to say though from the peanut gallery!

So you asked me and these 4 other GMs for our opinion on this deal without TT and with TT everyone still likes this deal for Minny. Why do it? or why ask for others opinion?

Like the deal for the Hawks, and understand why Minny had to move him
The only way you are going to get an elite player like OV is by pawning your wife's engagement ring. Now the secret is to scrap up the cash to get out before she wakes up
