Default Sam Sniderman Dead

http://www.torontosun.com/2012/09/23...sniderman-dies

Quote:
Sam Sniderman, founder of the Sam the Record Man music store chain, has died.
He was 92.
Sniderman died Sunday in Toronto in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones, his family said in a statement.
The coast-to-coast chain, once one of the biggest in the country, went bankrupt in 2001. His flagship store on Toronto's Yonge Street, which opened in 1959, closed in 2007.

He was a big promoter of Canadian music when it wasn't cool to do so.

I remember buying records from Mike Bezzeg (from FM Moving Pictures) at the downtown store.

No wonder they went bankrupt. Check out that computer, that thing is positively ancient. I've thrown out better computers than that.

That was in 2000 . . . Not sure flat screen monitors were around much then.

Or like many of his generation, if it worked then why get rid of it. That aversion to consumerism for the sake of consumerism is nice.

That was a pretty cool store on Yonge Street in Toronto. Lit up like Las Vegas at night.

I remember browsing the Sam the Record Man store in Winnipeg's Polo Park in the early 90's. Unfortunately, HMV has better selection and pricing.

That Toronto store was cool. Loved browsing in there it was one of the highlights of Yonge street shopping.

On the start of Q today Jian did a really good eulogy of Sam...talking about going down to Younge Street as a kid, then the joy of seeing his own records in the store with Moxy Fruvus years later.

I bought the "We are the World" cassette from Sam the Record Man back in 1985 - one of, if not my first ever, music purchases. Also worked at Sam part time in 1997, when I was going to school in Lethbridge. Great job - really low key, tons of free CDs and concert tickets, and a super fun atmosphere. Sams was already in decline by then though, and the writing was on the wall. Sure enough, a crew from Roblan Distributors (Sam's parent company) showed up out of the blue in January 1998 and shut the place down in less than 48 hours.

RIP Mr. Sniderman. Yet another marker on the end of an era.
