Default Desktop Power Supplies

Had a nasty incident with my gaming rig last night. Logged into World of Tanks, entered a match and suddenly my screen goes dark. Then computer basically shuts down. Sat there staring at it wondering WTF and the POP!! sounded like someone shot off a capgun in my rig.

HOPING it's just the PSU. I recently replaced all other components and this was a left over. More than capable power supply, I generally spend some money on them but it was getting old, it had to be around 5 yrs of age.

So looking around at new units and I'm intrigued by these new modular PSU's. Anyone have experience with them? Any reason to stay away? I see ME has an 850w CoolerMaster that seems to be very well reviewed for a decent price. I have a full sized CoolerMaster case so sometimes I have a bit of an issue getting power cables to the HD's and optical drive so I need something with generous cable length.

I would never use anything but modular. It makes things so much easier and tidier. If you have issues with length, modular means you can also get longer cables or extenders.

Modular is definitely the way to go.

Used em for the last two rigs I've built. Keeps things minimal and organized.

Definitely modular, and definitely don't cheap out on the PSU. Not just so that you're more unlikely to experience your PSU dying, but so if it does die it doesn't take the rest of your system with it. I've been running a 1000w SilverStone modular PSU in my setup for the last 5 years or so and haven't had a single issue

Oh and since yours actually exploded I would check your surge bar. Before my SilverStone unit I blew up 2 other ones before figuring out it was a faulty powerbar causing them to go

Interesting....

I use a cyberpower battery b/u unit for my gaming rig so I don't think it caused that but worth looking into for sure.

I'm sure it was just getting old. Power Supplies are one part that are hard to blow dust out of. It's been running a pretty big rig for about 5 yrs now so it was probably due to go. Just never heard one actually pop like that before.
