Default Internet Problems

I was hoping to find a general 'computer help' thread, but I wasn’t able to do so, but maybe someone can help a computer illiterate person figure out what is going on.

I have Shaw internet and a Wi-Fi network that is currently working (laptop and other devices can connect to the internet) but my home PC all of the sudden can no longer connect to the internet (connects to my Wi-Fi network and says there is internet service but email and internet browsers say that there isnt an internet connection).

The really odd thing is that I can connect to my pc from work through logmein perfectly fine.

Any ideas (I have 2 kids that use the computer who might of changed something for all I know)?

Thanks

Do you have McFee installed? They recently released an update that "accidentally" screwed up internet connections. If so uninstall that crap, and then install Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials.

I did a system restore from a few days back, it seems a java update I did seemed to cause some sort of driver issue or something. Seems to be working now.

Your DNS settings were wrong for some reason.

I wonder if it was malware manipulating the DNS entries? A Java "update" is suspicious these days and not necessarily to be trusted.

That was my first thought, but I decided not to go into all the possibilities since he had resolved the issue. The only thing that seems to indicate otherwise is that there was no redirecting to a site for monetary reasons(ads).
