Default Federal government grants licence for new nuclear reactors; first time in 30 years

Quote:
OTTAWA — For the first time in 30 years, a preparatory federal licence has been issued for new nuclear reactors.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has formally issued a site-preparation licence allowing pre-construction activities for up to four proposed nuclear reactors on land adjacent to Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) existing four-reactor Darlington nuclear generation station, near Bowmanville, east of Toronto.

Doesn't mean the project will actually get done, but its nice to see we're moving toward more clean energy sources and away from coal.

Does anyone know if Bruce is still considering building a site in NW Alberta?

It would be nice to see a renaissance in the Canadian nuclear industry.

The economics of Nuclear Energy in western Canada doesnt make much sense with the amount of petroleum resources we have. That being said, we also have a large amount of available uranium...

I don't want a uranium reactor anywhere near Alberta thanks. Thorium or bust.

I'll stick to "dirty" coal if uranium is the only nuclear option.

Northern Alberta is one of the safest places to have a nuclear reactor.

I'm all for it. but i'm prob a little biased with my uranium holdings. hehe

FYP, Thorium reactors use uranium, too.

I think near Swan Hills would be an ideal location for a LFTR, have the Swan Hills Treatment Center accept nuclear waste, use the LFTR to reprocess that waste.

Win, win...except for those with uranium holdings...

Ah yes the latest and great nuclear reactors are always the ones that haven't been built yet.

Two liquid fluoride reactors were built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the 50's and 60's, they have been built already.

If you're anti-nuclear, what the heck do you want?
