Default Joffrey Reynolds - WTF happened man?

http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...927/story.html

what the hell - talk about a downward spiral or what? possible jail time coming, house foreclosed on, driving a rental car......its a shame to see a CFL allstar like Joffrey going down that path

based on what i saw in the news, his ex g/f was very tall.....i'd imagine before he made a mess of his life, that he possibly could have latched on to antoehr team for another year or so.

i would have also thought that he he been able to stay on the right side of the law that he would ahve been able to nail down some type of pretty good job in this city.

Cautionary tale for sure, he's broke, he's probably going to jail, and he still has to face charges of working illegally in Canada. He's probably going to be deported.

He's definitely cost himself a shot at the hall of fame and the wall of fame at McMahon.

He's blown through his CFL career earnings of $83 already?

Does anyone know how much he made per year/over his career? I know the easy joke is "har har it's the CFL they don't make any money", but I'd imagine he'd have to be in the $100's of thousands a year, no?

He may have been at that level at the end of his career but I would think he made 5 figures for the majority of his career.

The average salary is apparently around $80,000 (for recent years) with younger guys making $40-60,000. He played in 8 seasons, the first was a partial season and it's likely he was on a low paying contract for the next 2-3 seasons. He may have made in the $150,000 range for a couple of years, but balanced out against those first few years he probably made close to the average overall. Not bad money, but not good money either.

In his last 3 or4 years he was in the 6 figures, and the top paid running back in the CFL

I seen him walking in Cowboys casino on Saturday night, so it feel free to make assumptions. All I know is that for somebody who's house is foreclosed, the casino isn't the best place to be.

"78 percent of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress" according to Sports Illustrated. I don't know if that statistic would be better or worse in the CFL, considering they are paid less, so will likely need to make money outside of sports the rest of their lives.

Sad sad sad, hate stories like this. Reminds me of the whole Allen Pitts situation back in the 90's after he finally hit the wall.

That number is staggering. Tells me that they are in a bad situation of living the high life, having everything done for you (maids, chefs, etc.), and having nothing but "yes men" and mooching friends around you constantly.

Pro athletes should be put through the gamut of financial responsibility courses during their career (and the sooner the better). I hate seeing down-and-out guys that were once the limelight darlings.

The time frame of that study would really help frame things more accurately. If you're including former NFL players from way back it wouldn't surprise me at all. Low salaries when they played plus ongoing medical issues is a recipe for bankruptcy. Are guys who make 7 figures going broke at a 78% clip? I find that a little harder to believe.

If you have a chance, catch the ESPN 30 for 30 called "Broke".

http://espn.go.com/30for30/film?page=broke

It touches on everything you've mentioned. It's a fascinating watch.

It might not be unusual now where some athletes have numerous ex-wives and children to support.

True, I just can't see it reaching 78%. Not among guys who had multiple year careers. There was obviously a long period of guys who were underpaid, so I can see them going broke. Then there was a period where the salaries seemed to increase dramatically but the leagues did little, if anything, to help players deal with financial planning issues. That opened the door to a lot of predators and stupid investments. Leagues really seem to be taking the financial education of their players seriously over the last few years, and while there will certainly be a lot of bad choices made, I'd expect that the number of former players who wind up in really bad spots will go down.

Even Sandro Dangelis had a job hocking cars at a local dealership during his time here. You think that Joffery could of kept himself employed if he wanted to.
