They don't pay for submissions anymore. I took a photo of the Citadel Fires that they used for the Front Page of the print edition (They did ask me first), and when I asked about compensation, they said I would only be credited on the cover.

This is hardly trouble, before you enter the penguin exhibit they tell you that sometimes a penguin jumps the plexiglass and finds itself on the walkway. They tell you not to touch the penguin and that zoo staff will come and move it back.
I believe an article about this video mentions that all the zoo penguins came from another zoo, so they are very familiar and comfortable around people.

I tweeted out a video of a hail storm about a month ago (not THE hails storm last week) and was contacted by somebody from global, who did ask to use it. Common courtesy is appreciated, but they don't have to ask.

lol wow that is shameless. They made money using your photo on the cover and all you got was credit? What a joke. You definitely should have been compensated.

Seems like they could remedy this situation pretty easily with some netting above the glass. There's only a few inches of clearance between the water and the glass. Don't cotton candy covered kids stick their hands in there constantly?

Yahoo! used one of my youtube videos once, but they contacted me first, had me sign a release, and paid me with a $50 gift card. I thought it was pretty cool.

I think there are usually 2-3 zoo employees in the enclosure, watching for people that may try to do this, and stop it if they do.

Nah, the staff is pretty vigilant, and everyone hears a big spiele while standing in line. I've been there dozens of times and never seen anyone attempt to stick their hands in the water or touch a penguin, but every now and then someone needs to be reminded about not leaning over the water with a camera or having a kid riding on their shoulders. The experience there is awesome and I sincerely hope there's never a need to put up netting, but of course it requires people being responsible. If people aren't being responsible, the zoo would need to act in the best interests of the animals.
