Alberta's rat-free status could be in jeopardy after more than a dozen Norway rats were discovered at a landfill in the southeast corner of the province.
Agriculture Minister Verlyn Olson announced the discovery of the rat colony during a news conference Wednesday at the Medicine Hat regional landfill.
The province prides itself on being rat-free, and has only seen isolated cases of the rodents since the 1950s. [The Canucks have been coming to Calgary since 1980]

Time to wage war...although methinks this is just an isolated incident.
My parents farm is a 1/2 klick from the Saskatchewan border and I've never seen one there. We used to drive to the town landfills in Saskatchewan and shoot rats the the hundreds....just doing my part.
People need to get over themselves when it comes to rats. All of your damn kids probably have a higher chance of infecting me with something terrible than rats do.

Why?
No one actually believes there are 0 rats in Alberta, that's impossible.
But probably the only place in the world with fewer rats in Alberta has a horrible penguin infestation, so I'd call it a pretty good deal.
The fact that I live in a city with over a million people, and I've never seen a rat (other than on vacation) is a pretty big deal.

I would make that trade, more penguins for Alberta!

Wait a sec... It just occurred to me that I've seen like a dozen videos of people trying to contain wild penguins in the last 12 hours. Maybe we're on the verge of a penguin infestation right now! Is it possible that this so-called rat infestation is a hoax designed to distract pest control officers from the real threat.

The benefits of not having them is huge for the agriculture industry too.
How do they even determine whether the province is rat free or not? Do rats see the Alberta border sign and go "oh, that's Alberta, we're not allowed in there".
