I expected the sign to stop grooving once the music was turned off.

Anyone know if a car was hit by it. It looked like pretty thick traffic.

Shades of Tacoma Narrows! Thanks for sharing.

How many times does it have to flex like that before the structure is permanently compromised? Will it suddenly collapse months later when the weather turns cold?
Can't help but think of this, sympathetic vibrations amplified until failure.

Amazing. Even more amazing is I heard that the weather was different in Tokyo today, than both Calgary AND Coure d'alene

Yeah the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was nicknamed Gallopin Gertie. I saw a program where the bridge would not have collapsed if it had a triangle shaped outer surface to deflect the wind or allowed the wind to pass through it with cut outs in the side.
I've seen signs and traffic lights sway like that in Calgary but I've never seen one collapse. Perhaps the engineers could improve on their design. Knowing Calgary traffic engineers though, they'll probably just put up red lights everywhere when the wind speed reaches a certain limit.

Current sign structure design requirements are ridiculous compared to what it was like when Deerfoot was built. Before it was essentially two light standards welded together to the base. Now it's these monster engineered structures you see on Stoney Trail and the like.

Only the sign fell off, the Pole stayed up (saw it on my drive home at 6:30).

Knowing Calgary traffic engineers, they'll probably design an overpass that takes commuters over the sign. Problem fixed.
