Default Life in Fort Mcmurray

Bunch of pictures.

Mining the world's second largest oil deposit requires a huge, skilled, and dedicated workforce, and getting it to the wilds of northern Canadian requires more than just a beefy salary.
It requires a city that appeals to a global population, their kids, and their spouses. A city where oil workers can blow off steam after several days cramped up in remote dorm rooms, as well as a place where a young PhD from a big city would be happy to call home. A tall order.

Yeah, but Fort Mc sounds either too Irish or too much like a McDonalds' food item based on trapping history.

Looks like one of the last places in Canada that I'd want to live.

That looks pretty much like every single small city that I have ever seen. Not saying that Fort McMurray doesn't have it's fair share of problems but that is what happens when you have an area with an economic boom.

Granted looking through the pictures it looked like the guy came there with an agenda in mind... having an issue with an Oil Company sponsoring a pool and a recreation complex?

Edit:

The caption to this photo is "reminding workers of the life they choose" - I have to question the integrity of the author

I worked up there once. The worst camp facilities I've ever experienced which is odd since they have been around for a long time and will be around for a lot longer. Anyways it was a place to make some good money in a short time but it was good to see it in my rear view mirror. I've worked in some pretty isolated and #### hole places but that has to be the worst. Maybe a lot of my experience can be put down to the majority of the guys coming from Edmonton.

I have fond memories of McMurray, had my first beer in a bar there in 1990. Went back a few years ago for a work trip and it was less exciting, incredibly annoying actually. Not a great place to visit anymore and I can imagine how horrible it is to live there now.

Thanks for posting the article!

My friend is from Fort Macmurray, except he pronounces it "Fert McMerry". Must be the Newfie kicking in.

I worked up there for a few months in the mid 90's and really enjoyed it. I guess a lot has changed since then.

I had no idea there were Somali drug dens up there. I always thought it was a bunch of home-grown 2nd/3rd/4th generation Canadians who ran the drug trade up there. Huh.

Why? Are people who call a guy named Robert, bob also morons?

You are familiar with the concept of shortening a name yes?
