A rural peace officer who was badly beaten and dropped off at a Calgary police station has died of his injuries.

The officer who worked in the MD of Foothills turned up at the District 8 office on Friday morning in grave condition and was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Bizarre.

I live half a mile north of this incident. I was outside gardening and there was a lot of noise and activity going on. I think the helicopters were maybe associated with the military? large and black, real loud, certainly much louder than the ones that STARS flies. Police sirens were sounding and the like too....I thought that perhaps there was a bad vehicle crash at the intersection of Priddis Valley Road and 22x...I certainly never thought someone might have been murdered.

That is probably the HAWCS police helicopter.

That is frightening. Over a dog issue. Wow.

He is, for all intents and purposes, a cop killer. Show him no mercy, your honour.

From the SUN, although not verified . . . . .

The suspect had to have known the deceased was an officer of the law from prior visits dealing with complaints.

The suspect on an earlier occasion had phoned the RCMP and had them come out to his place to complain that the bylaw officer was trying to steal his dogs.

He knew in advance the bylaw officer was coming out yesterday.

He ambushed the bylaw officer, handcuffed him, beat him severely, drove him to a police station, went inside to complain to the officers that someone was trying to steal his dogs, took the officers back out to the vehicle and pointed to the deceased saying that was the guy who was trying to steal his dogs.

You have to be pretty severely damaged mentally to go through those series of steps.

And then the owner of the property, who almost gives the appearance of being a business partner of the suspect, is basically saying this would never have happened except for "nosy neighbours" who wouldn't mind their own business and that the officer had been "harrassing" the suspect for no reason.

The owner of the property is severely messed up as well.

In MD of Foothills you're not allowed more than six dogs on a property. Anything over that and you need a kennel licence. Its not clear if this suspect had that licence. Since his complaint seems to be that someone was trying to "steal my dogs," then it probably follows he didn't have a licence and the dogs were going to be confiscated.

At a guess, it sounds like he was running an illegal puppy mill.

First degree murder, planning with forethought. I hope the landowner is involved somehow and gets taken down as well.

Very sad end for an officer with a storied career in the RCMP like that.

Presuming the offender is charged with murder, it will be first degree no matter what the circumstances due to the fact the victim was a peace officer.

Stuff like this is always hard to hear. I hope they lock both of them away for a long time.
