How does demetia patients just wander away from a hospital? There should have security doors in place that prevented these patients from walking away. I hope some people are fired over this.

2 people that were in the hospital died of preventable causes unrelated to the reason they were admitted into the hospital. I don't think its completely unreasonable to jump to the conclusion that someone along the chain was negligent and should no longer receive a wage to care for dementia patients.

I only read the choking patient article, but surely nobody deserves to be fired over that. We can't expect nurses to supervise people while they eat. It sucks, but I'm not sure that heads should roll over that.

Those deaths were prevetable because the proper measures weren't taken. I've volunteered in a number of LTC facilities where magnetic doors are installed in certains wings of the unit to prevent demtia people from walking away.

You're right, we can't expect nurses to watch them 24/7. That's why we keep them in locked units where they can't walk away.

I'm guessing someone doesn't have a job so they never have to worry about being fired.

I'm sure there were magnetic doors in there, too. Maybe a tradesperson left one open not knowing he shouldn't, or there was a door malfunction, or a hundred other things that could have happened that shouldn't mean we should look for the closest person to fire.

Dion, dion, dion.
What are your thoughts on the person who choked? Should somebody be fired over that?

It looks as though the nurse call buttons may not have been functioning at the time. If true, procedures should be in place for extra supervision in those cases. Kind of hard to tell if the patient attempted to use the system if it wasn't working though, so who knows.

God forbid there should be a real death and not a bedridden one.

Fire all the people! Its not like we dont have enough nurses and doctors anyways, we can just replace them.

Only three incidents?
I think that's the hardest bit to believe.

Who needs 'em? We have Dion to volunteer! He knows what to do and never makes a mistake.

Does firing someone really solve the issue though?
I know it's the classic response to anything bad and, yes, lots of times people deserve to get fired for these types of incidents. But it completely ignores the more important part of the problem - implementing a solution that makes sure it never happens again. Simply firing staff doesn't do much for that.

I accidentally got the wrong directions to a friends room at the Foothills a while back. I ended up on the wrong floor, being the elderly demnita area. Something I will never forget.
Anyhow, I managed to get out, but on a floor with no door handles or buttons, and several security layers, it took a while. From what I saw the staff was trying hard to keep these folks in. However, first thing when the elevators opened, a few of the patients tried to rush in. They then stood by the door waiting for the next car to come up.
It really was a traumatic and heart breaking experience. I can't blame the staff though, that is one tough job and I will give benefit of doubt to these folks 100% of the time.

The CEO on Global News said these patients are not locked up.
