Default Olympic GDT - 29 July

Canadian athletes in action today

For a list of every Canadian in every event, check: http://olympic.ca/canadian-schedule

10:40 Rowing – Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls Heats, Eton Dorney
Lindsay Jennerich, winner of the world title in 2010 and a World Cup event in 2011, teams up with Olympic newcomer Patricia Obee for this event.

12:00 Cycling Women’s Road Race across London and Surrey
140km in three and a half hours – it’s the women’s road race around iconic London landmarks, including Hampton Court Palace. One of our most celebrated athletes, Clara Hughes, is a serious contender for a medal. And she not only cycles – she’s also an Olympic medalist in long-track speed skating in the winter games.

15:00 Women’s Synchronized 3m Springboard Final, Aquatic Centre
Emilie Heymans, Canada’s most successful Olympic diver, teams up with Jennifer Abel for this event. The duo won a silver medal at the World Cup this year and face tough competition from the Chinese pair He Zi and Wi Minxia.

Jennerich and Obee finished 5th in their heat and so are headed for the repechage.

Going to head down shortly to stake out a place on the course to see Clara Hughes and the women's road race. Will be interesting to see how the crowds compare to the men's yesterday, but it looks like it is threatening to rain out there so might be a bit less crowded. Here's some comments from some cyclists yesterday about the massive crowds that turned out:

Three Canadian cyclists in the women's road race which as a whole is about half the size of yesterday's men's field. Raining, lots of water on the course and a number of cyclists have suffered punctures or spills but so far the Canadian riders have avoided any problems. Still one peloton with no breakaway group(s). So Canada has as good a chance as anyone at a medal here, if I can be cautiously optimistic.

Clara Hughes keeping pace amongst the frontrunners but none of the other Canadians are amongst that group so she'll need to band together with some of the other countries to conserve enough energy to be in the picture closer to the end of the race.

There's now a breakaway group of four out in front of the peloton, which is still being led by Clara Hughes. At some point Hughes and some others will need to work to close the gap if they want to be in a good position on the homestretch.

Hughes must be pretty far back now though. Not near the front of the group at this point.

Yeah just got back from the sidelines and Hughes was not even the leading Canadian as they passed about 10 minutes out from the finish line. No one was going to catch that breakaway group of three though, they were miles ahead.

Glad to hear about the bronze for Heymans and Abel.

Given their archery and fencing prowess you'd think Italy would have been better at medieval land wars.

As strange as the purple is at Wimbledon, the fact they players are wearing colour and not white is the hardest thing to adjust to.

Canadian Tara Van Beilen finished tied for 8th in the 100m breaststroke semifinal with a jamaican girl.

They're going to have a SWIM-OFF later(?). That might be one of the most exciting things we see!

I really wish Canada was better in the pool. It feels like ages since we had someone who was a legit threat to win a swimming event.

20 years since Tewksbury won our last gold.
