I was wondering what people use for tracking portfolios. I have an account through Scotia iTrade and am not really impressed with the portfolio tracking. I would like to be able to graph the changes in my portfolio over time, and also track the individual stocks graphically.

I have thought about setting up my own spreadsheet for this, but haven't found a good database for daily closing numbers that I could use to pull data from online. If someone knows of a good place to pull numbers from that would be very helpful as well.

I use the Stockhouse.com my portfolio tracker. You'll need to create an account and input your share quantities, but it does what I need it to.

I just use google finance to monitor stuff like my RRSP since I'm not flipping stocks all the time.

I use google finance and the one built into Questrade's webapp. I like it because it also shows me Fx impact of my investments and net positions in CAD.

Scotia I-trade takes too long to log in and for security reasons it kicks you out so I use Bloomberg Mobile app on my phone and it is great! Likely the best app on my phone! Gives you last price, % change, value, profit/loss, change, position, bought at, high, low, volume, p/e, market cap, related news on each holding, charts : 1 day, 1 month, 6 month, 5 years.

Also has equity indicies, currencies, worldwide news, podcasts. There is also a Bloomberg Businessweek app that gives more of a general overview of business news but Portfolio wise Bloomberg Mobile app is the best one I have found.

The Bloomberg app is a must have for the Blackberry. Makes tracking all positions and indexes easy.

My one complaint is that sometimes the information provided about the companies is not very comprehensive. But as a simple tracking tool for following positions on a daily basis, it is excellent.

Honestly, I think Google Finance would suit you just fine for this. Web-accessible, no software to install, simple and easy. Once you set up a portfolio, it'll graph that in addition to the individual stocks.

All of these mentioned so far don't seem to do Canadian mutual funds. Anyone know of a good one that 'll do that (Yahoo/Google don't). In addition to stocks of course.

The only two I know of are Morningstar and Globe Investor (of which I use). Frankly, GI has been starved for new features in the last 5 years and worst of all, doesn't handle F/X on US securities correctly. I'd switch in an instant if there was something better and not crazy expensive.

Bloomberg on the iPhone is something I use a lot of and for me it's incredibly frustrating. The Blackberry version showed portfolio data all in columns (Change, % change) whereas on the IPhone I have to get rotate though the column to show the various types of data. Waste of Space). I've recommended them to implement a feature where if you rotate to landscape in Portfolio you'll see all the columns to no avail.... The Bloomberg news coverage is great though.

It would also be great if we could get some yield data on the security but that doesn't show. Kind of important.

I stand corrected - looks like it does cover Canadian Mutual funds.

In playing around with a portfolio though, it doesnt look like I can enter the purchase of US stocks in CAD and properly track F/X on the purchase. Too bad, other than that it looks decent for the price.

I have set it up in Google Finance now. Seems to work pretty good for my purposes.

You can increase your maximum session to 8 hours under the Accounts tab > My Info > Security & Passwords > Set Session Timeout: 8 Hours > Save Changes

I don’t know. We use excel and only update it once a quarter because most all our investments are buy and hold. But I started reading the thread without looking at the dates and it wasn’t until I got to “must-have app for Blackberry” that I realized this was a pretty epic bump from the past.
