Default Tesla Gigafactory

Tesla Motors will be building, along with its partners, a $5 billion "gigafactory" in the US to produce lithium ion batteries for their cars. Tesla is expected to directly invest $2 billion with the rest coming from partners.

By 2020, the gigafactory will produce more batteries in one facility than were produced in the entire world in 2013.

This will reduce the battery pack cost for Tesla by about 30%. The lithium ion battery packs will be built from raw materials to finished product in one facility and the facility will also recycle old battery packs.

It will also allow Tesla to ramp up from their current production of a projected 35,000 vehicles in 2014 to 500,000 vehicles by 2020.

The gigafactory will have renewable power generation built around it to provide power. It will employ roughly 6,500 people and will be up to 10 million square feet.

Construction is expected to begin in FY 2014 with production beginning in 2017.

Tesla and Panasonic said to reach agreement on gigafactory

Quote:
Panasonic has reached a basic agreement with electric-car maker Tesla to participate in a large-scale battery plant, or a so-called Gigafactory, according to a Japan-based report.

Panasonic is expected to invest between 20 billion yen and 30 billion yen (about $194 million to $291 million) initially and will be in charge of equipping the factory with the machines to produce the lithium-ion battery cells, Japan's Nikkei reported in its Tuesday edition.
Quote:
Total investment in the factory may reach $5 billion, with Panasonic contributing about $1 billion, according to Nikkei.

The report did not mention, however, where the plant's site would be. Tesla is evaluating three sites in the US.

Panasonic owns a stake in Tesla and makes the batteries used in Tesla's cars.

God I want a job at that company. I have no idea if I am qualified for anything at all there, but it would be awesome to feel like you're part of something constructive. Build it in Canada Elon! Lots of empty space for you here.

Of the world? Yes.

At first I thought you wrote "OFF the world", to which my response was "that's appropriate".

Reminded of the Lego Movie; it'd be something Lord Business would come up with haha.

A lot of ppl talking biut, no final say from either side. As it is, no absolute plan for location of the other plant.

Love the idea and presentation...However an 8 month design window (from concept to detailed design) for a $5B project seems extremely optimistic regardless of the engineering firm. Two and a half year construction/equipment installation is probably in the right ball park.

I think if the money & the concept is there 8 months is not that bad. The largest problem with big projects seems to be either where the funding is coming from, or an ever changing scope.

God I love this company. So damn progressive. No BS red tape and fat cat backscratching, unlike so many others out there. I hope Calgary becomes a city fully invested in the electric car industry, including all necessary infrastructure, when Tesla's presence makes it way north.

By the end of the year there will be superchargers in Red Deer and Canmore, and Tesla is opening a service centre in Calgary soon.
