Ya its all full of water and people! The entire area is fenced off now, probably to prevent the late night swims and dumping of trash in it which made the water so disguisting. It is open though and in full service though!

I was there a few weeks ago and there is water. It had probably been 8 years since I was last there. they completely revamped it by putting a fence around it so they can control people going in (ie no glass allowed, obviously also checking for booze). I hear the water is now being treated, so I was told by a person.

Lauren Taylor and Emily Beck hydrate at Sikome Lake, Alta., Monday, July 20, 2009. Calgary paramedics are warning the public to take precautions and are prepared for a spike in heat-related medical calls. Local temperatures are forecast to hit 29C and feel like 33C. (Sun Media/Brendan Miller)

Yes, the water is now treated. They also imported new sand after the flood of '05.
It's very nice.

No, it's about 6 or 7 feet deep in the middle.

I took the kids there about a month ago and they have just as much fun there as they do at the ocean....they basically do all the same things....dig and get dirty....swim...dig and get dirty again...etc. It is a lot better now that they spruced the place up and they have good shower facilities to clean most of the sand off after. There was a grass fire to the east of the park the day we were there so the kids also got the bonus of seeing firefighters in action....I actually prefer it to Sundance and Chaparral. I used to rollerblade around the park before they put up the fence and biking and rollerblading are no longer allowed there....likely a good idea with the amount of people that go there at times....

Oh yeah I don't know if there's even a better place to go in the city for girls between 15 and 20 in bikinis. I love Sikome Lake!

Do people ever swim there? As in swim for fitness? I'd love to be able to swim outdoors instead of in a pool, but I'd take a pass if I'm swimming through some 7yr old's oh henry logs.

Back when I was a kid my mom took us there one day and saw a floater (yeah, that kind of floater) drifting in the water. We never went back again.

Good to hear the fixed the place up. I remember going as a kid and being unable to swim because the water was filled with some kind of weird tube shaped algae or fungi.
The water looked like a giant bowl of well diced Mr. Noodles.

I definitely remember going there when I was little and seeing several dirty diapers floating around. Glad to hear they've cleaned it up a bit since then...
I also have this weird and vague memory of hearing about how a horse drowned in Sikome once, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like that was probably just a story we made up as kids to freak eachother out. Anyone know if that actually happened?
