Looks like another amazingly difficult set up for a US Open. I was surprised to see so many guys under par today after all the bitchng and moaning these guys do leading up to the start of the tournament.
I love the US open and the way the USGA sets up the course. It is a nice change of pace to see those guys really sweat out there and struggle like the common man does. We see enough tournaments where they shoot 25 under par.
Any thoughts on a winner and their score?
Tiger is always a good pick but I just don't think he is quite where he wants to be yet. Although it would be cool to see him complete the grand slam in a year. I think he will win at St. Andrews in July.
Goosen looks good to repeat again, he has a great US open demeanour and a fantastic short game which you will need here.
My official pick though is going to be Phil Mickelson. Just have a feeling he can pull it off. I say he wins with a 2 under par.

Well it seems that the top scores look okay but the overall scores are two strokes above what they were in the first round in 1999.
Looks to be another round of Goosen, Tiger, Phil, Ernie and Vijay being the favorites. I expect one of them to win but it will be interesting to see who and how many others will be there on sunday as well.
Being that he is by far my favorite player and has a good chacne to win I will pick Phil as well to win here after a close loss in 1999.

I love it too, I could watch Golf all day, it's really an aquired taste to be able to watch it. It really relaxes me and can be extremely exciting at times.

I'm going on Sunday. I was hoping to be able to cheer on Weir a bit, but it looks pretty doubtful he'll be around.

I was offered to go as well on the weekend, but had to decline due to a previous committment.
I have a feeling the USGA is going to let the greens start to dry out a bit as we get to Saturday, and we will see scores balloon on the weekend.
I agree, Tiger is just still to wild off the tee, and you cant do that at Pinehurst. He got away with it at Augusta because the penalty of going wide isnt any where as severe as it is at this course.
Gotta like the way that Goosen is playing...again.
Mickelson will be close at the end, as will Vijay i think.
Long shot pick...Stephen Ames.

Looks like Mickelson is shooting his way out of it today. 6 bogeys on the Front 9. OUCH! A 41 is not what he wants.
I think Phils problem is he psyches himself out at the US open. He is one of the guys bitching and saying 10 over is going to win the tournament. As soon as you get in that mind frame you start beleiving it. Jack Nicklaus used to say that he had at least half the field beat before they even teed off because those guys talked themselves out of winning.
Everyone plays the same course. Who cares how hard it is. Just shut up and play the best you can and then add them up at the end.

No idea what is going on in Mickelsons head.
He has missed 6 putts within 8 feet....unreal. The greens arent even that difficult one you get on them...no huge swingers anyhow.
Ames and Weir have BOTH blown up today as well..unlikely a Canadian sees the weekend.

Damn! I get up early to watch Phil only to see that he is 6 over for the day and 5 over for the tournament. I don't think Phil was bitching. He seemed excited about the challenge and just thought, quite possibly rightfully so, that the winning score would be over par.

Weir is +8 for the tourney and gone from the weekend if the cut is as predicted.
Ames is +6, but could see Saturday and Sunday.
The guy all should watch depending on how Tiger and Co. do today is Jim Furyk....dude is just getting it done.....fairways, greens two putt par.....which is exactly the kind of game you need to win this weekend.

Your right. Furyk is quietly making a charge. Not a big fan of the guy though so I can't cheer for him.
What is the projected cut? I heard it was 8 over.
The wind is starting to blow a bit. We need it to really start blowing to push the cut line up if Weir and Ames are going to make it.

Cut is at +7 right now but could easily go up to +8 if the wind keeps up and players in the afternoon shoot high.

Good news. It looks like Ames and Weir are safe for now. I can only see that number going higher.

Well once again this is the Reteif is making enough birdies to stay under par what is wrong with the rest of you show. Amazing how this guy comes out and consistantly plays this well in this tournament. He is a US Open specialist. When he's finished up he'll have like 7 U.S.G.A. trophies, and no other majors. Of course if you're good enough to be a repeat winner of the U.S.Open chances are you'll win a couple other majors too.

It has been a great day of golf today.
Amazing how Retief collapsed, Campbell has been awesome and Tiger found another way to sneak into major contention.
Looks like Campbell is going to hold on and win it here which is awesome for him. I am just glad Tiger didn't sneak his way into another victory here.

Well Campbell was great today. When the wind picked up early in the round I was thinking that getting into the clubhouse at +5 might win the tourney. But the weather settled, and Campbell didn't falter. He didn't miss oppurtunities, and when he put himself in trouble he did exactly what you have to at the open and played to make no worse than bogey. Tiger played some great shots too, but he missed a lot of chances. Still good start to the year for Tiger at the majors, both times it's been down to two guys distancing themselves from the field, and Tigers been one of those guys on each occasion.
Should add that I never saw that Goosen collapse coming, I would have lost it all today had I been betting. But you could tell on the second hole that Retief had nothing today.

That was a great final round with guys completly tanking and plenty of guys coming out of nowhere to contend. I totaly did not see Tiger or Campbell as being there at the end and certainly thought that Retief was going to be at or at least near the top. I thought if anyone would over take him it woudl have been Toms or perhaps Browne or Gore if they could play an amazing round.
Despite the poor scores, especially Phil Mickleson, I really enjoyed this US Open. The cinderella stories, tension near the end etc. all went to show me why I love watching Golf majors.
