Have been taking my kids (4 and 6) to a local skatepark sunday mornings for the last month or so. They have been riding their scooters and playing aroudn a bit on their boards.
I have been getting the itch. Took a few passes around on a board one of the other dads let me borrow. So awesome. Just like being 13 again.
Quite a few guys there in there mid 30's like myself riding.
Anyone else start skating again?
I am just in the process of building up and ordering a new board. Leaning towards this remake of an old Caballero. the nice thing now is i can afford the swiss bearings and nice wheels, trucks, etc.
The only problem is I know when i wipe out i am not going to be able to bounce back quite so easily.
It's good to see the spirit of the 90's lives on your kids! Skateboarding will forever be one of the main cultural references of that decade for as long as I live. Glad to see some Gen X'ers still doing it!
a while back my son was given a $30 skateboard and he has recently taken and interest in trying to ride it so i was giving him some help. i was thnking that if he gets a good report card the wife and i should reward him with a new deck - she is not completely sold on the idea yet - but as i was looking at decks i too started to get the itch and i am 47. When i was about 11 to 15 i was almost always on my deck......

Bought a couple boards last summer. Within a week I had a good hard wipeout, board went out from under me, my whole body was parallel to the ground and I landed hard. Kids thought it was hilarious, but my hip was sore for over a month. I'm trying but it's hardly worth the pain. If I go down to many things stop and that's not good.
I bought a skate again a few years ago and have had fun with it (I'm 35). I haven't used it this year yet, but I took it out regularly last year. After all these years it's still an awesome way to get around. I can even do a kick flip still, but I haven't done it on pavement yet (just grass haha).
I've taken my kids out skating as well (3 and 5 last year). They love it.

Longboarding is really catching my eye now.
I actually bought a longboard as well, but with almost off-road-looking tires. The rubber is soft enough that little pebbles don't stop you dead. It's really fun and feels a lot safer than my other board.

Right about the time the Flames were winning the Cup these guys were my other heros. Calgary actually had a pretty good skate scene back then.
We made a stop at Bill Wheels in Santa Cruz last summer to pick up a board for my son and I didn't realize how much some of the old boards we trashed.....er....Thrashed......are worth now. Some of my Tony Hawk boards would have be nice to have held onto. I don't follow anything in this area these days but the manager of the store was saying that his favorite skater was from Calgary. Anybody know who this might have been? I don't think Calgary has really put out any big name skaters but I could be wrong? Maps to the skaters homes......
I just came back from LA and went to Venice Beach for the first time in my life. I quit skating 10 year ago, and I have never had a itch like I did when I was at the Venice Beach skatepark watching those kids and adults ripping it. I stood and got lost in my own personal paradise for 3 hours. In another life, I would be living in Venice Beach skating and surfing for the rest of my life...
My son turns six in a week and has been saying he wants a longboard for his birthday - I've even had the urge to grab a couple so I can learn with him. I don't know if this is a good idea.... sounds like broken limbs to me!!
My kids just bought me a longboard. Having never skateboarded before, I pretty much suck. They bought it for me so I can ride with them, or Cruz, or roll or whatever the hell they call it..
Good times, I was never that great, my brother was pretty good. We used to go out to Vancouver so he could compete and he always came home with a prize..
Brings back memories..

I go out just about every weekend with a bunch of guys in their 30s and 40s. A bunch of us are involved in CASE (check the link EverfresH15 posted) trying to get new parks built in this city. Calgary is sorely lacking compared to other parks. It's embarrassing how far ahead Edmonton is in supporting skateboarders.
Here are some shots from a session in Airdrie a few weeks ago:

It hurts a lot harder as you get older. Bones snap and even shatter. Ligaments that used to stretch sprain and often tear. That rang your bell feeling when you hit the masonite turns into concusions that linger or short term memory loss.

That is cool how those boards have the grab rails on them.........
I wonder if those boys from dog town still skate........I used to love looking at the pics of guys skating in those giant cement drain pipes in California in the skate board magazines.
