Default Quebec nation debate could be re-opened in Liberal race

MONTREAL—It haunts them still! Ever since Pierre Trudeau retired from politics, the federal Liberals have tried and failed to agree on how to reconcile their party with mainstream Quebec.
The issue split the party into irreconcilable factions at the time of the Meech Lake debate and the 1990 leadership campaign. It inspired the most divisive debate of the campaign that led to Stéphane Dion’s surprise 2006 victory. By all indications, it will be revisited in the upcoming Liberal leadership contest.

Frankly I hope Quebec does leave Canada, we would be better off without them. Both sides would be happier. It would be bad news for the Liberals since they would have trouble finding leadership candidates.

What's your commentary on this issue, Rerun? Do you think the government should recognize Quebec as a nation or not?

Honestly Rerun, you should just go ahead and start "The Ongoing Mega Liberal Bashing Thread" and save the creation of numerous threads.

I see the fearmongering isn't just limited to those with an irrational fear of Stephen Harper.

I do to. Well actually I don't, I wish the faction in Quebec that thinks they are entitled to be their own nation would GTFO out of Canada. But seeing that is not going to happen, then yes Quebec should just separate and take their % of debt with them. Within a year they would collapse as a country and Canada would have to bail them out, and in the process they would become part of Canada again, minus the separatists.

I always thought thier idea of a sovereign Quebec included no debt.......I'd shudder to imagine how many years it would take to hammer out a separation agreement.......

Doesn't their version of sovereignty include no debt, use of Canadian military, use of Canadian currency...etc...

Only thing is, if Quebec separates, where will I get my cheap beer?

How can you have independent authority when you don't even have your own currency? How does that work?

I think Quebec is an important part of the Canadian Tapestry. But then again, I like both Pierre and Justin Trudeau. So really I should probably just move down East.

No debt, use of our currency and passports. Oh Quebec government employees would keep their federal government jobs in Ottawa. Have an integral role in NAFTA, share Canadian embassies over seas. And be paid reparations for past insults to Quebec.

In other words they want all the benefits of being Canadian while not being in Canada

As much as I'd love to see Quebec get the F*** out of Canada, I really worry about Atlantic Canada getting cut off as they have to cross the border with Quebec to trade and interact with the rest of Canada

Not a problem, Quebec as a truly independent nation would collapse in short order. I say we call their bluff once and for all.

I guess someone needs to point out that recognition of Quebec as a nation isn't synonymous with separation. I'm not in favour of either, but it needs to be said.

I actually want it to come up in the leadership race though. Too often these important issues are swept aside because politicians are scared to touch them. They're afraid that if its known what they're thinking then it will cost them future elections. It might. At the same time I think its an important discussion for Canadians to have. I want politicians to say where they stand on issues like this, capital punishment, abortion and just about any other contentious issue.

So at what point should the rest of Canada say 'Ok, enough. Perhaps we want you to leave?'
And if we do, I vote we do it the right way...we say 'I break with thee' three times and throw dog poop on their shoes.

Who says they want to leave? I would bet that if a referendum were today it would be pro-Canada about 65-35. Just because people (politicians) bring it up doesn't mean its popular or contemplated.

Most mainstream Liberals believe that their party cannot come back to the major federal leagues without doing better in Quebec.

Most federal Liberals from Quebec — in particular the party’s shrinking francophone cohort — believe that there can be no recovery in the province without the party coming to terms with modern Quebec’s view of itself as the home of a distinct nation.
Is this true?

I must have missed the day you had anything good to say about those with an ideology left of yours.

Keep pretending you're anything but an ideologue.

But thanks for the shout-out.
