Default Huge donation to the Calgary stampede foundation

Im surprised there is not a thread on this yet.

A Calgary philanthropist donated several thousand acres near Longview to the Calgary stampede foundation. I can't seem to copy the link from the herald web page . 11 million dollars worth of land of rolling hills next to kananaskis. Awesome to see.

Great example of how a treasure can be protected outside of the realm of bureaucrats.

Kudos to the donor mr. Siebens

3000 hectares.

TTC is probably going postal.

Some rich dude just pumped the Stampede's tires huge with this donation. Was his dad Howard Siebens?

I was at the Calgary Stampede Volunteer party tonight, named "Saddleup." They made the announcement there. Mr Siebens received quite the round of applause from all there were in attendance.

...and Paul Brandt put on a good show, too!

This is a great gift to the Stampede and to preserve the land. My hat is off to him.

I don't really understand the point of this.

What's the Stampede Foundation going to do with this land?

Pave it, install diesel powered tilt 'o' whirls with one stuck car, and deep fried bologna sandwich stands as far as the eye can see.

It's a ranch. They'll likely keep horses on it. The Stampede operates a ranch near Hanna as well, where they breed their own bucking stock.

3000 hectares? Isn't that like 5 quarter sections? Must be a massive plot of land for a ranch (although I guess it would have to be at $11 million).

3000 hectares is actually more than 11 full sections.....huge piece of property.

Set against a backdrop of the Rockies on rolling foothills, it comes complete with an 1885 ranch house, a replica North West Mounted Police cabin and a rich history that includes everyone from former owner Senator Patrick Burns to the Sundance Kid, who hid out there while on the run from U.S. authoritiies.
That's pure awesome.

Not postal, just *sigh*.

EDIT: Oh, and since I know Frank will be disappointed unless I add this...

Oops... I was thinking 300 hectares... Wow -- what the heck do you do with 3000 hectares? How does one even obtain 3000 hectares?

Inherit it over the course of a century I would imagine.

Not that I'm certain, but the Herald article seems to elude to Doc Seaman having owned it, and then Bill Siebens ponied up and bought it for the Stampede.

Quote:
The subject of the up-for-sale OH Ranch, owned by the late Doc Seaman and next door to Siebens’ Tongue Creek Ranch, came up.
“I’d like to say I thought hard and long about it,” says the father of three and grandfather of eight with a chuckle of his quick decision to buy the environmentally protected ranch and gift it to the Calgary Stampede.
