Duncan Keith moves to Columbus
To Columbus:
Duncan Keith
2nd (phi) 2013
To Montreal:
Patrick Berglund
1st (CGY) 2012
2nd (CHI) 2012
2nd (MTL) 2012
Thanks, MJK for the quick and easy trade talks.
I like this trade because it saves me a ton of money for at least three years. Keith is an amazing player, but is in his last RFA year at the top of the grid, so he either costs 8.5 this year and max thereafter or 9.5 for the next three years. He's a player that's well worth the price, but it does somewhat limit other roster options.
Patrick Berglund is a beast, who will be reasonably priced for at least the next three years and still RFA after that. He showed himself to be a playoff performer in the NHL this year, and is only going to get better on a good Blues team.
It's also nice to be picking earlier in this draft. 13th overall is a great pick, Chicago's 2nd is early, and I get to swap a 2nd next year for one this year.
Now I need to replace Keith.

Love the deal for Columbus. Berglund is a solid player but I have yet to see anything that puts him in elite status...especially considering he is playing behind Oshie and MacDonald. IMO when trading a player of Keith's ilk, the return needs to include a guaranteed blue-chipper/younger star.
EDIT: Both parties seem happy with the trade so that is important. Moreso though, good to see a big trade go down.

Big deal - well done guys.
Bergy is a guy I drafted but I thought at this point he would be producing more offense consistently. That being said - he looked great in the playoffs and if he can carry that over he can perhaps reach a higher point level next year.
Overall though this is exactly the type of deal I like where it balances current needs but also gives you a lot for the future.
And Dave gets a great dman.
Even Steven.

I expected people to like this for MJK because he got the best player and that's what seems to count for people. This is actually one of the deals with MJK I've felt best about after accepting. I think we both did just fine. From the way people are talking, I expect MJK to flip him for a big profit, though, in the very near future. We'll see.

Well untill we see what those draft picks are... it's Keith for Berglund.
Nail the picks and could very well nail the trade. Great things about trades like this, we never really get to see how great or how bad they ended up turning out.

If nothing else, my draft day will be more exciting than it was going to be.

I would say it's 10x more fun now that we hold it before the NHL draft. There's something to be said about putting your cards on the table before the REAl scouts play their hand.

Definitely. That's the big part of the fun. Get to do some homework and try to find some guys that are underrated in the later rounds. I didn't expect to have 19 picks, my pick list was only about 10 names long so I'm trying to fill my list now.

He was rushed for sure, but I think the fact that he admitted McDonald's was his favorite food didn't help either.
