Question What could Calgary do to move up in the draft rankings to acquire Nathan MacKinnon?

While everyone else seems content with arguing the merit of drafting Lindholm vs Monahan, I can't help but continue to dream how amazing it would be to have a true franchise Center in a Flames uniform.

Make no mistake, Nathan MacKinnon will be a huge impact player in the NHL, as he has at every level over the past decade.

Assuming Colorado will be drafting Seth Jones, what sort of package do you feel would convince Florida to move from 2nd to 6th overall? Do the Flames even have the assets to make such a deal a reality?

Here are a few proposals, interested if you believe any of them would have a shot. The offer would have to be something pretty special to even catch Florida's eye, IMO.

Veteran roster defenseman + B-level prospect
To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - 2013 1st round pick (6th overall), Mark Giordano (D) and Markus Granlund (C)

Veteran roster forward + two 1st round picks
To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - 2013 1st round pick (6th overall), 2013 1st round pick (from STL) and Mike Cammalleri (LW)

Three 1st round picks
To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - 2013 1st round pick (6th overall), 2013 1st round pick (from STL) and 2013 1st round pick (from PIT)

Young roster defenseman + C-level prospect
To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - 2013 1st round pick (6th overall), TJ Brodie (D) and Michael Ferland (LW)

Three 1st round picks + two prospects
To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - 2013 1st round pick (6th overall), 2013 1st round pick (from STL), 2013 1st round pick (from PIT), Markus Granlund (C) and Michael Ferland (LW)

What do you think, would any of those offer enough value to the Panthers to drop 4 spots?

I think prayer is a good option.

I honestly have no idea.

The problem is we can't really afford to punch any new youth holes to acquire him. Yes he'll be very very good, but worth the damage? Not so sure. If it cost more than extra picks, then it would be too rich.

\Young roster defenseman + C-level prospect
To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - 2013 1st round pick (6th overall), TJ Brodie (D) and Michael Ferland (LW)

I think that package would perhaps have a chance of getting it done, not to sure if I would want to move Brodie though.

Honestly, if it's a package you don't want to give up, that's likely the one that would do the trick.

I'm always changing my mind but right now, at this moment, I say keep the three picks and make our selections

Monahan at #6 please.

Unless Sven is going the other way with our 1st, nothing will get us MacKinnon.

The first four won't do it and the fifth is simply idiotic.

And there is no way that the difference between the player at 6th overall and MacKinnon is worth Baertschi.

Nothing that would be worthwhile. People just have to let this idea of moving up go.

In no way should CGY be dealing with GM Tallon. He will Fleece you in any attempt to acquire that second overall pick. You would have to make a ridiculous proposal just to even get him from hanging up the phone. It is possible of course, but at the expense of so much you would be right back where you started before the last two drafts.

When Burke wanted to pick Chris Pronger in 1993 he had the 6th overall pick. Pronger was projected to go 2nd overall.

Quote:
Burke traded#Sergei Makarov, a 1st round pick in 1993 (Viktor Kozlov) and a 3rd round pick in 1993 (Ville Peltonen).
In return, San Jose gave the Whalers, the Leafs’ 2nd round pick in 1993 (Vlastimil Kroupa, prev. acquired), and the Sharks’ 1st round pick in 1993 (Chris Pronger).
It all depends on the mood of the GMs on the day & the needs of the franchise(s). It's not going to cost Sven Baertschi.

So...

To CAL - 2013 1st round pick (2nd overall)
To FLA - Mike Cammalleri (LW), 2013 1st round pick (from PIT) and 2013 3rd round pick.

I'd do that deal in a California minute.

Which is why Florida would not do that deal.

I honestly see no point in moving up. Mackinnon looks like a stud but any one of the player's available at our pick could turn out to be great players as well. I say we keep all of our picks and draft the BPA.

There is a big difference between a franchise Center and everything else, IMO.
