Snooping Calgary Police Service caught invading privacy!
The Calgary police were caught violating email privacy in a big way during a small investigation. Clearly we have problems ensuring that authorities don't abuse their existing online spying powers—we're nowhere near ready for warrantless electronic surveillance codified in law (i.e. Bill C-30).
In fact this just shows how invasive and wrong Bill C-30 is.
Link to story.
"CALGARY — Security experts with Calgary’s Police Service broke provincial privacy legislation by snooping in a civilian employee’s personal email account and copying topless photos of the woman as part of an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace.
Alberta’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has ordered the police service to stop collecting personal information in this fashion and has directed that staff receive training to ensure they don’t overstep the law again."

If this was a work email account, there is a problem with topless photos. If this is a personal email account, there should be absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Either way, police intrusiveness is intrusive.

From the article:
Quote:
When the manager found a message sent to a family member containing the woman’s log-in and password for her personal email, he used that information to access the account.

I think I am okay with it.
She used a work email to disclose her password to her personal email. Her employer owns all content in her employee email so she essentially disclosed her password and email to her employer. So upon finding that information looking into her personal email is fine by me. They didn't hack in. They found something in plain site.
The ridiculous thing is this person got there job back after clearly violating HR policies. So much so that other people made complaints about here behaviour with an on Duty officer.

Umm, that's not really how it works. If you have an email in your corporate account with your credit card number in it is your employer now free to go ahead and use that?

So what if they had her login information for her personal email? Thats her personal email, neither her employer nor anyone else has the right to just login and check around without any form of permission.
Just because they stumbled onto the login information doesnt give them to right to check her email. And if her at work disposition was so terrible why do they need anything from her email to can her?

That's not how it works.
If I leave a key to my house at the police station, they still need a warrant to come search my house.
This would be the same type of situation.
Just because they can now gain access to her personal email, doesn't mean they are allowed to.

Was the IT manager an actual constable or a civilian employee of the CPS.
Two very different things.

Not really. An IT manager, of all people, should understand that they could not do this.

I'm just pissed off that the cops get a slap on the wrists for breaking the law that they're sworn to uphold.
You know, things that a regular person would go to jail for.
The Police should be held to a higher standard of accountability in regards to the law, not be exempt from it.
