Default Air Canada serves lockout notice to pilots

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/stor...da-strike.html

I don't know if anybody has been following the labour strife at Air Canada, it has been ongoing for quite some time. If anybody has a fleeting interest in it I encourage you to do some reading rather than believe the posturing and politics in the media.

But shiat just got real.

May want to have backup travel plans.

The Harper government's crushing of labour, combined with a bloated and hostile Air Canada management that blames its workforce rather than encourages it has all lead to this.

I love my job, but the way this industry is going down the toilet makes me want to be a truck driver.

"Whats the name of that truck driving school? Truck master I think it is, I might need that"

What a joke everything about this airline has become.

The airline must be banking on the federal government to bring back to work legislation of some sort. A short term lockout coupled with the maintenance workers strike would do a lot more harm to Air Canada then the loss of a few days wages would do to the unions. I would think a long term flight stoppage would cripple the company and probably result in an open skies agreement with the US to keep people moving.

Great, I'll be flying with them in 3 weeks. I hope it isn't a very prolonged lockout or strike. Not sure how easy it is to switch airlines, especially since it was booked through AirMiles.

I am quite sure that Air Canada is expecting the Conservatives to order the pilots back to work. The pilots have absolutely zero leverage... they can either accept this deal or be ordered back to work. There is no incentive at all for Air Canada to budge one iota.

It seems with everything going on with unions lately they are becoming more and more useless because the goverment just orders them back to work. Are unions still needed in a country with our labour laws? I understand why they were good 30, 40, 50 years ago but now a days it seems to overlap a bit and you pay into a union with zero benefits.

It looks like the lock-out has been delayed. http://www.aircanada.com/en/news/tra...r_updates.html

Air Canada really needs to be put on the chopping block and left to swim on its own. They can't seem to survive yet alone compete without government bailouts, and other airlines just plainly do a better job.

I don't see why taxpayers should continually have to fund a airline.

Perfect. So it'll get pushed back just long enough to screw the flight I have in the beginning of April.

Interesting look at Air Canada salary versus bonuses for their executive team. I'd be fine with bonuses if Air Canada was profitable.

but this is gross

By Comparison

West Jet executive salaries and bonuses

Glad I'm flying BA.

Other than all the times their staff go on strike, they never go on strike.

I don't think I've flown Air Canada in over 5 years. I've only ever taken west jet throughout my university career, and when I went to Kawaii with my family we flew Delta. Westjet just seems so much less hassle, why would I pay the same for a flight on an airline that always seems to have so many problems.

Flying out on Saturday via AC, but coming back with Westjet. Thank goodness. Hate to have my vacation screwed up by these guys.
