Default Amazon Kindle E-Reader

Anyone know where I can get my hands on one in Calgary? I'm shopping for a Christmas present.

I think they're just on Amazon.ca

Chapters sells their own version that is worth looking at too.

Is the Chapters one along the same platform with the same available books and just made by Amazon for Chapters? Self-admitting, I know nothing about these things.

No...the Kobo ereader (what Chapters/Indigo has) is a different reader, but does have a pretty good library I think...goto chapters.ca to have a look or google kobo...

Just did some looking around. In my opinion, the Kobo Reader from Chapters is better than the Kindle. And being from Canada, I would think there are more titles on it than the international version of the Kindle (you can only order the Kindle of Amazon's US site)

The Kobo reader has everything the Kindle does.

Also sort of cool that it comes with 100 preloaded books.

I have been studying to buy one as a Christmas present for my mother. I wish I would have looked into it earlier, as the only place to get the Kindle (which is what I find to be the best of the lot) is on Amazon....and they won't even ship it until January.

Well that completely refutes my research. And if it is a product available locally with a good library then this might be the answer.

Thanks for this.

Is the Kobo not good hardware? My only concern is it might feel cheap.

Order off Amazon.com, not .ca. They have it in stock. They collect GST/HST so that you won't be charged for duties at the border.

Since you have used one, how exactly would I order books for it? I notice it can browse the store directly from the device, so would I have to pre-load an account or something? Thanks in advance.

I believe you can set up a credit card on your profile on Amazon.com, and download books over your Kindle. Also, you can link your Kindle to your account and download them off Amazon.com by choosing Send Book to your kindle.

Since it is sold locally go into Chapters and play with one. That is what I did. I like the feel of it with the quilted back, to me it makes it easier to hold then the flat back.

Another good thing is that with the Kobo you can get books from the library for free.

Also another good site for kobo books is http://kobobooks.com/.

One last thing, I ordered some gift cards with my airmiles so I will get my kobo for free.

I don't like the Kobo. It feels nice in your hands but the page turning button has a pretty loud 'click' when pressed. Kindle and Sony readers are pretty quite when page turning. Not a big deal but reading in silence, I found it annoying.

Make sure the reader you choose can handle ePub (electronic publication). It opens your reader up to use free (not pirate) sites like manybooks.net.

ePub doesn't tie you down to just kindle store or Sony ebook store, etc.

That is too bad. I figured that if it is from Amazon it would require a credit card to purchase books...which isn't an option for the person I am purchasing it for.

Kobo seems like the logical alternative. Maybe I'll go check one out.

You can use Amazon gift cards to buy books. Much cheaper than using a credit card as well if you buy the book at the right time exchange rate wise.

The Kindle is a more feature filled and faster machine than the Kobo. The contrast level of the screen is much better and the book selection of the Kindle store is better than the Kobo store.

The big downside of course is that you can use epub, but the average ebook user doesn't care about that. Only the savvy ones will use that to their advantage, which makes buying books through the kindle the most efficient option, especially since you can buy them right on the kindle. I've only connected my kindle to my computer once.

I don't have an e-reader but a few of my co-workers are into these little devices. The consensus I have gotten from them is that the Kindle 3 is the better bang for your buck for quality. Research some forums for help, from what I've gathered the Kobo is cheaply built.

I'm campaigning for a Kindle for Christmas.

After some research it seems like the Kindle is nicer hardware and better bang for your buck. The Kobo's advantages come from being cheaper and you can check out library books with them. I'm sure at some point you'll be able to do the same with the Kindle.

You can only order the Kindle from amazon.com I believe, meaning you have to get it shipped to Canada, so it's closer to a $180 investment.

Where can you get these in Canada outside of ordering one online with a credit card?
