Default xbox audio help.

I finally let the boy buy a 360 and hooked it up to the receiver but I cannot get audio to work. I was able to get it to work from the xbox to the TV but even that stopped working for me. is there a trick to getting audio to work over the HDMI connection?

I have an Onkyo TX-SR605 and it handles everything else I throw at it...

No tricks, should be entirely plug & play.

Make sure your audio on the console is set to Dolby Digital 5.1, and that your receiver doesn't need to be switched into a specific mode to handle DD5.1. My dad's old Kenwood receiver wouldn't play DD5.1 over optical from his Xbox 360 until I manually turned on Dolby decoding for that particular input. I'm not familiar with Onkyo receivers, so YMMV.

If you are using HDMI for audio and video, and it goes directly to the receiver, then the receiver uses HDMI to communicate with the tv, then the receiver must be set to the appropriate input device. Post if this is where you are and I will go from there.

also remember to adjust the output on the xbox itself in the settings to match what you want from audio.

All HDMI cables in my setup. The HDMI inputs can be assigned to any input selection. HDMI in 1 to Cable HDMI in 2 to Game etc. The input for the xbox worked fine when I switched my cable box over to it, came up right away.

It looks like it is something flaky with the xbox. The audio will work if I power the xbox up first and then the amp. It loses audio if I try to switch between two sources. Weird. Are there any flags that need to be read by the amp that be be dropping off? Similar to having to use a DVI detective on certain PC outputs when running KVM switches?

Sounds like you have a handshake problem, go into the xbox settings and turn off "display discovery". See if that fixes it.
