Personally, I think they should've banned combustible materials, and sharp objects first, but yes, it is now illegal, to install a door knob in Vancouver.
I actually can't think of a new home that comes with knobs instead of handles. It seems to me that they're largely out of style anyway.
If they are going the accessibility route, I'm surprised they didn't just ban porch steps to get inside houses and require that all entryways be accessible by ramps instead.
Very dumb law for private home owners, but still, leave it to the sun to stir as much outrage as possible:

The ban not only applies to municipal buildings such as Vancouver City Hall, where most of the treasured art deco style doorknobs will be removed, but extends to all new homes built within city limits.
Why Toronto sun must you put that adjective in your article? Just to make people feel they are loosing something they never cared about before?
Banning door knobs on private homes is silly, but banning them on businesses or public buildings I have no problem with because it makes sense. Levers are much easier to use to the general population. I don't really remember the last time I saw a knob on a new building anyway.
Also, it says the ban is not retroactive, so not sure why we need to remove the "art deco" door knobs at city hall.

This is pretty much a non news story.
In private homes, there is good reasons why some people want knobs instead of levers. Kids and pets can open levers much easier, which can be a problem.

Especially on the outside door. The amount of people inconvenienced by a door knob does not outweigh the risk to children and pets.
One of the things we did to childproof our house was change to doorknobs on the closet where we kept cleaning supplies and the basement stairs. Our outer doors are all doorknobs already.
Stupid law to apply to new homes

The "private homes" thing only applies to new home builds, and it sounds like it applies more so home builders than anything.

The new building bylaw, to come into effect in March 2014, bans doorknobs in new homes, favouring the more accessible door handle instead.

The bylaw is not retroactive, so if residents won’t have to get rid of doorknobs they already have in their homes.
On the surface level this does sound like a nanny-state kinda thing, but given that it sounds like there's nothing stopping a homeowner from installing their own knobs after the fact I actually see no problem with this bylaw.
But more importantly, where can I buy one of those treasured art deco knobs they're gonna be replacing? Hope they don't get destroyed.

Hard to believe CP went 10 posts without a "stupid SUN and their redneck readers" comment
I guess when people agree with the story then they dont criticize the news organization.
That city is already full of door knobs, had they made it retroactive to current door knobs then every member of council would have had to move out.
On a separate note, are there any new home builds in YVR other than infills and condos? I dont mind if they have a policy for city buildings but to implement something like that for a personal user because of the less than 1% of the people who have a problem using them, seems very Nanny state ish to me which I guess goes along with YVR ongoing policy
