Default Snow Route Parking Ban no longer in effect

Quote:
Snow Event advisory - Snow Route parking bans expected

Environment Canada is forecasting snow accumulation of five centimetres or more in the Calgary area. As a result, city-wide Snow Route parking bans are expected to be declared in the coming hours.

Calgarians parked on designated Snow Routes are advised to move their cars as soon as possible.

Vehicles that remain parked on these roads are subject to enforcement, up to and including a parking tag and tow. Snow Routes include major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes and are marked by blue signs with a white snowflake icon. A map and full list of Snow Route locations is available on Calgary.ca/snow.

Snow Route parking bans help The City clear snow from major traffic routes more effectively and enable crews to get to residential routes faster. This will benefit all Calgarians and will help make travel safer for everyone this winter.

For more information, visit Calgary.ca/snow or call 3-1-1. Please do not reply to this email as this address is not monitored.
Well this should be interesting to see how this goes....

edit @ 1449....now the snow ban has been lifted...disregard

Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering what those signs were along 20th Ave.

It's the right thing to do, but man are people going to be annoyed by this.

Yeah I use to live on 20th Ave and I can't imagine this being in effect now...gonna be a cluster on all those side streets.

Oh and I saw this was posted in the Weather thread as well...I guess if mods feel its excessive, they can lock this up.

I am extremely torn on this issue.

As someone who is forced to park on a street that will be affected by this, I am a bit annoyed at the effect it will have on me. I am literally going to have to walk over a block to get to/from my car.

As a driver who enjoys a freshly plowed street, I am happy about the change. We also won't have to see those cars who are plowed into their spot and spend hours digging out.

Should be interesting to see how it shakes out. The street by my place has well over 100 cars parked along it, not exactly sure where they expect them all to park. The neighbouring cul-de-sacs are going to be crammed, leading to pissed off people who get home to find cars parked at every spot in front of their house.

Has Calgary ever instituted this type of a ban before?

People won't move their cars. You'll still see that.

Up here as well. It didn't go so well the first time around. People claimed they didn't know about the ban, despite an overwhelming amount of media attention, and use of social media by the city. Not enough vehicles were towed IMO. Many many fines were issued though. Hopefully people get the picture in Calgary pretty quick.

Nope, it's brand new here.

Funny- last night on Global they showed poll results that showed almost half of the people have no idea how this works. Link Is this really that complicated? When it snows more than 5 cm the city will activate the snow routes.

As long as there is enough enforcement to not park on the route this should work great. If they let too many people off too easy, then no one will adopt it.

I hadn't heard of this coming into effect until this thread. There's going to be a lot of grumpy people this winter.

They've said that the first couple of times, they'll just be issuing warnings, but after a while, it will lead to tickets/towing.

I live on a snow route, and based on the number of people who park on the street, I don't see how there will possibly be room for all the vehicles on side streets, which are usually pretty full as it is.

Lets do time warp!

Seriously though, I can see a lot of people being put out by this. Not sure what all the people in my neighborhood on the main road will do, usually it is lined with vehicles (and is more dangerous to drive in the winter as a result). Maybe I should start renting out some driveway space.

This is going to be nasty. Is Impark publicly traded? I should buy stocks in Impark during the winter season.

I don't think it's callous. Some people (not sayin that this is the case here) seem to think that because they own a car that it comes with free parking. If you don't have property on which to park a car then any time you can park for free then you are being given goodwill and you should realize that you are not entitled to park for free.

Totally agree.

I think it is the idea that it is a fairly established practice to park on the street. It is just the idea that one day it is fine for someone to park in front of their house, now it is not. Not really arguing some sort of vested right to park there, just that people had become accustomed to it.

It would totally have an effect on desirability of certain properties. Fortunately I rent and will probably move by next winter.
