Default Wrath of Grapes: The Don Cherry Story Part II

Anyone else watching this? What do you all think?

I enjoyed the first go around, so I was interested in seeing part II. It takes place just as he gets into coaching the Rockies (I tried to keep my eye out for McDonald and Ramage, didn't see 'em) and flashes back to his junior days. It moves into his Coach's Corner segments about half-way through the first part.

Calgary sure gets a lot of love, and I guess that makes sense since the glory years were taking place just as Don started into broadcasting.

There's one big issue I had, and it came up near the end. Whoever the screenwriter is (I know his son Tim wrote the original script/story) really should have done some research and constructed a proper timeline. They ask Don to correct his pronunciation of Manny Legace...about 7 years before he was even drafted. And right near the end he is talking about how good the Flames are (yay!) in the background, and he mentions players like Fleury, Roberts, Otto, Macoun....then all of a sudden he starts talking about "the guys they got coming up...That Iginla, I tell ya". And this is all happening, from what I can tell, in about 1986. It's before Ron McLean was on the program. Really amateurish.

Other than that it's been pretty good for what it is. Cool that they brought back Booth Savage to play Harry Sinden, same for Judah Katz playing Alan Eagleson. Thoughts?

Announced before they started making it? A commercial for it has been on CBC steady for the last 2 months, hard to not miss if it you atleast watch HNIC.

Coaches Corner: The Movie.

I saw the preview clip on Coaches Corner on Saturday. Wasn't too impressed. Looked like a typical CBC production. In other words, it was CBC spending our money to masturbate in public.

I noticed this also. It's even before Fleury's time, but nice to hear some love for the Flames. I didn't watch part 1 when it originally aired, but caught it earlier in the new year. Not bad at all, but some of the hockey players (particularly the Rockies) look like total doofs. One of the great Don Cherry - Colorado Rockies stories was left out. From his book, when the Islanders were in town and beating the Rockies 3-1, Cherry called a timeout with a minute or so left. One of the Rockies joked "well Grapes, do you want us to tie it or win it?". Cherry told them (roughly) "That team over there is way better than you. It should be 9-1 or 10-1. Beers are on me after the game!".

I actually sat down and watched this...which is odd because outside of HNIC I watch very little CBC (though I support them for the most part).

The guy who played older Don was awesome...in fact, in a world where Canadian actors are...well...so Canadian, this felt like a pro production. Acting was terrific, story was decent and it looked pretty damn good.

Even the kid who played the younger Don was great too.

Looking forward to part 2.

I would really encourage People to pick up Cherry's book Grapes, its an amazing story to read, very well writen and gives you a deeper feeling into what has been a very crazy life.

I also doubt that they'll cover the first time that Cherry really dressed to the 9's when he returned to Boston with the Rockies whereing a velour suit.

Fan "Hey Cherry you look like a %%%"

Cherry - "Holy crap he's right"

It might be politically incorrect now, but in the 70's it was hilarious.

I caught the part about Legace and it drove me nuts. Also the establishing shot of Calgary featured both Bankers Hall towers before they were built. And it had the Saddledome and the Suncor Energy center when there's a good possibility they might have been under construction at the time... they were being very vague about the years.

If you guys weren't so picky you might actually enjoy it.

I have enjoyed every second of it so far. Worth watching.

Caught the last 2/3ds of the movie. Good show. Adam MacDonald was great as older Cherry.

seconded. The drinking contest between Lanny McDonald and Kevin Morrison is one of my favourite stories.

There is being picky, but then there is not being able to suspend disbelief due to stupidity.

My lady friend made me see Hugo last weekend. Why everyone in Paris sounded like they were from London ruined the experience for me. Was I being picky then?

If I hadn't enjoyed it, I wouldn't have been watching it. They pickiness is just for the parts where they didn't pay enough attention to the details. For a movie about a guy I can no longer stand on a network I can no longer stand, it entertained me.

Hmm. So you don't have to be a fan to find entertainment in it? I may have to check it out. Maybe..

Oh you're talking about the movie that won all the Oscars?

Oh well, since they all had London accents and the movie took place in Paris, then it MUST have been a mistake!

I took another view- I tried to think of why all the actors were British when the movie takes place in France, and let myself enjoy the movie without getting too worked up.

Some people take their entertainment way too seriously.

Actually, they did have it in there. I couldn't make out what the guy said to him, but the scene was in the part that aired last night.

Pointing out some major timeline discrepancies is hardly being picky. As I said, I actually quite enjoyed it and will definitely be catching the final installment.
