A seismic shift in demographic trends is transforming the world into an increasingly African place, creating huge economic opportunities, as well as new risks for political instability and extreme poverty, a United Nations agency says.
Quote:
Africa accounted for only 9 per cent of the world’s population in 1950, but by the end of this century about 40 per cent of all humans (and nearly half of all children) will be African, heralding one of the fastest and most radical demographic changes in history, the report says.
While every other continent is seeing a slower rise in births, or even a decline, UNICEF projects that 1.8 billion babies will be born in Africa over the next 35 years, and the total African population will nearly quadruple to about 4.2 billion by the end of the century.
This is where China impresses me, they are investing heavily in Africa, infrastructure, deals with many nations, getting a foothold in what will become a major player in the future.
Say what you want about China, they are everywhere these days using their wealth to put their fingers in all the cookie jars they can.
To sustain that large of a population, the entire world and its government needs to get their heads out of their asses and work towards the common good for all mankind.
...who am I kidding, that's just a pipe dream at this point.
Yeah, I was gonna ask if they are including in their information the number of people who have or will die of AIDS or other STDs and whatnot. Sure they have a lot of babies, but there's also a lot of illness and war as well.

Iran's parliament has voted to ban permanent forms of contraception, the state news agency IRNA reported, endorsing the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's call for more babies to be born.
The bill, banning vasectomies and similar procedures in women, is parliament's response to a decree Khamenei issued in May to increase the population to "strengthen national identity" and counter "undesirable aspects of western lifestyles".

On that note, do the authors assume that Africans will (hopefully) have better access to education and contraception in the future (both of which correlate very strongly to smaller family sizes), or are they only using current birth rates and extrapolating from there?
I heard a story a long long time ago, that some agency had handed out birth control pills in some country in Africa. The women ended up planting them in the ground thinking they were supposed to grow food. They couldn't get the concept of birth control through to them.

Not if the Vatican has anything to say about it.
