If they have video of you making a mosh pit in the elevator then I would say you are SOL, otherwise I would tell them to pound sand. Sounds like they are just trying to recoup the costs of fixing their elevator. IANAL and IMO.

I think this is a stupid question Troutman, but:
Is the process the same for me to take them to small claims even though it is them charging me? Would I sue them for the total amount asking it be cleared off the account?

You should counter sue for emotion trauma, claim you're claustrophobic.

I don't have enough info. Have they already charged your credit card?

I am confused here.
Is this a condo building you are living in? And they charged your unit?
Also, were you being a jackass in the elevator, and triggered a safety device? Because if you were, I can't see why you shouldn't have to pay the bill. Certainly the board/other residents shouldn't have to.
I had a similar issue in my building where I removed a common area fire door to carry a recliner up. The I leaned the door awkwardly against a railing, it plummeted down the stairwell, and damaged the wall, and door. I got a $600 bill I just had to suck up. It's not the other residents fault.

What do you mean a charge back? I take it this is the building you live in and they have access to your account? How else would they even know who you are or who to bill?
In which case you need to contact your FI immediately.
You likely signed a Pre-Authorized Debit agreement which should have had a very specific amount on it. They are not authorized to debit your account for anything other than what you authorized them.
Talk to your bank about reimbursing you.
I literally just did one for my condo fees and I had to write in the exact amount of my fees. They are not authorized to debit any other amount at any other time.
I guess it is possible that somewhere in your debit agreement it states that they are allowed to debit you for things like this but I find that highly suspect.

So, you were drunk and jumping in the elevator and told someone and now are questioning the costs?

People regularly get charged for elevator restarts. usually charge 500-1000$ from the tradesmen.
Ive been stuck in residence and in an apartment building, and unfortunately for other people involved I also know that when you get unjammed you get lost and dont show any ID to anyone.

Condo - maybe go to the next monthly condo board meeting, and dispute the charge. If it is not paid, they may ultimately register a lien on your title.
How could they prove that you caused the elevator to be stuck?

It seems like there is proof.
