Default He explored the Amazon at 13, attempted suicide-by-jaguar and rowed across the ocean

...He was the most interesting man in the world.

Quite possibly the greatest obituary in New York Times history.

I had to read to figure out what suicide-by-jaguar really was.... based on everything else he did in his life I was expecting him to of beaten the jaguar up with his bare hands lol.
Anyway, pretty exciting life this guy lived!

Wow that is just awesome.

The suicide-by-jaguar reminds me of something I heard on "Leopards of the Night" (PBS/NOVA) :

The beautiful death,
Who puts on a spotted robe when he goes to his victim.

The playful killer, whose loving embrace splits the antelope's heart.

Gentle hunter,
His tail plays on the ground while he crushes the skull.
Beautiful death, who puts on a spotted robe when he goes to his victim.

Playful killer, whose loving embrace splits the antelope's heart.

Makes me cry **waaaaah**

Rowed across both oceans... that's insanity. Can you imagine six months out at sea, by yourself, just rowing every day? And a year for the Pacific, but at least he had company.

I love how the article says "He applied to be a pirate." I am gigling at the notion of job applicants waiting nervously in a room for their turn to be interviewed...

Do they have to say "Aarrrrrr" and prove they can drink gallons of rum?

Six months by yourself, or a year with only your wife for company?

Who wouldn't prefer the six months?

A guy in his 20's spends a year stranded on a boat with his girlfriend with nothing to do but row, eat and f***. Yeah, sounds horrible. Who wants women around anyways...

Care to explain? Apparently my Lougle'ing skills are sub par, all I could find was articles talking about the same obit. Actually this thread is the 3rd Google result.

Didn't he train ocelots?( Apparently the last known wild jaguar in the US was captured in 2009 and soon died.)

So maybe this guy liked to play with the cats (mm...) I didn't realize they were the 3rd largest cat.

Suicide by jaguar:

I'm unable to get back into the article to post the exact quote, but from memory it states in it that he was despondent over a failed love and vowed to kill himself by letting a jaguar attack him. However reason, and the gun he brought with him, prevailed.
