Stars make a pair of deals

Dallas continues to look ahead a season or two with both these deals. Hishon is a risk as he has not played since being crushed by now teammate Braydon McNabb in the Memorial Cup last year. However, prior to the hit he was an elite offensive talent. I’m taking a gamble that he can get back to form in the next season or two…I like the risk reward on this deal.

In the second deal of the day Dallas sent a solid sim player in Antoine Vermette along with prospect Tobias Rieder to Nashville in exchange for breakout rookie Matt Read. Vermette, while very serviceable, was not in my long-term plans. Having acquired Hishon in the earlier deal, I needed to clear an ECHL roster spot so Rieder was shipped off. Pretty straight forward with Read…having a strong rookie season and I hope he can take it to another level…

For me this deal was pretty obvious. I hate parting with Read, but I wanted a solid center and Vermette fills that role for me. I also added Rieder who will hopefully turn out well going forward (although he is an Oiler).

I know Knuble is very much a rental and will likely retire after this season, but he shores up the weakest side of my forward ranks at RW. He can put up points with the right players, and as I am at the bubble of making the playoffs, he could be the player I need to really push hard.

As for Hishon, he is definitely a risk both ways. He could turn out phenomenal and this deal will end up haunting me. Likewise, he could never play in the NHL. Only time will tell. As I have a glut of talent coming up the ranks at Centre, I had the ability to move one at least.
