Colorado and Columbus hooked up on a big deal this evening.

Coming to Colorado is Dion Phaneuf and Rene Bourque.


"We are excited to have a cornerstone d-man like Dion for years to come. We have been looking for a franchise d-man for awhile now and we finally have one."

When asked why a pending UFA like Rene Bourque fit into this re-tooling of the Avalanche GM Swayze11 replied "Hes awesome trade bait and is available right away to any team."

Going to Columbus is Filip Kuba, Matthew Lombardi, Colin Greening, 1st(col), 1st(conditional) and 2.5 million in cap.

We felt we could afford to give up some youth and the future to bring in a guy like Dion who can play big minutes and not be hurt like the rest of the team.

Naw. This deal helps me with depth right now and in the offseason it is Greening and two 1sts for Dion which I also like. I like Dion but he is not the type of D I want to build around and spend $6.5mill on. I will need to cut costs somewhere and if I can add 1sts by doing so then it seems OK.

I asked two vet GM's about this deal. 1 thought it was OK but I should shop Dion and the other said it was good value. The bottom line is I wanted to add 1sts and I don't think anyone else would have moved two 1sts in a deal for Dion. Maybe I am wrong but I don't think I am.
