Default The "It seems too good to be true" thread

So I just wondered if there would be interest in a thread dedicated to consumer protection, and online fraud prevention. I'm looking at buying some oakleys and ebay feels like a minefield to me. Example:

http://stores.ebay.com/authenticglasses

These guys have crazy low prices. They're rated extremely high, 19k ratings and 99.4% positive. http://myworld.ebay.com/authenticgla...id=p4340.l2559

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OAKLEY-GASCA...item4ab36175c7

So here are these gas cans I want. In store you'd expect to pay 150 for these. Here he has them at half price.

I bought a pair of juliets on ebay 5 years ago, no problems at all (and saved over $200).
But yeah, I know what you mean by minefield...

Dodgy sunglasses may look the real deal, but they could do real damage to your eyes as there is a good chance the lenses don't offer UV protection to the eyes.

This claim is misleading, as it suggests that the glasses themselves are responsible for causing harm to your eyes. They stand to cause no more damage than not wearing sunglasses at all.

You are wrong - very wrong. When light is cut out by tinted glass, your pupils dilate in order to let more light into your visual system. Tinted glasses without UV protection let more harmful UV rays into your dilated pupils. You are also more likely to not protect your eyes from the light of the sun because your natural defence of shielding your eyes does not come in to play.

Thanks for posting and proving that the poster you quoted has no idea what the hell he is talking about (again!).

Thank you for posting this. After posting, I started looking into it and you are absolutely right. I retract my previous statement.

Again? Is your ego still hurting from the "California high school student solves cancer?" thread where you made an outlandish claim, refused to substantiate it and quickly disappeared when your claim was proven to be demonstrably false?

Difference between you and me - if I'm wrong, I'll admit it and concede my position. Take a hike.

I have knockoff designer shades from Hong Kong and I can't tell the difference between the $300 real thing and my $30 knock offs. They even have amazing polarized lenses (the lady told me they were Polaroid lenses lol).

I haven't bought anything off of ebay, but in my experience with Amazon's Marketplace (or whatever the feature is called where 3rd parties advertise though Amazon), one thing you have to look out for is the unit price of a product being low but the shipping cost being ridiculously high and not disclosed until after you place the order (though you can still back out at that point).

Is it the Reepok, or a Nika version?

Bought these exact Gas Cans for $3 in Thailand. I compared them to my buddy's authentic pair and they were identical (except for the lenses probably). But $3?! C'mon, I can't pass that up.

I bought some for $10 dollars on a trip... came back to compare with my friends who paid like $100 (I think) from an online retailer. They looked identical but when I took them to compare at Oakley, there were minor imperfections that you could tell weren't real. Turns out he bought fake ones so we were both comparing fakes.

Regarding the whole fake is bad thing, yeah, I've purchased a real set of oakley's.

cheap golf clubs.

There's lots of stories, some place goes out of business etc.
My personal one was, I had a friend who had a friend who had a friend who ships containers from China. He had some room left in his container so shipped, some real Ping and Callaway sets to fill it up. They came straight from the factories there, so they were authentic, they just didn't have serial numbers.
I dont' regret the $200 (or maybe $400, I forget) I spent on a full set of Ping irons + Metals + leather bag as they lasted almost a year, and actually worked fairly good. But they were funny. All of the inserts on the back of the irons fell out, they rusted pretty quick, and the face of the driver caved in but it's not like I didn't expect it. Plus I sold the bag in a garage sale.
I have a friend who has been taken about 3 times now, thinking he was getting a really good deal on clubs.
