Nike+ Fuelband?
http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?l=sh...=glfl_fuelband
Anyone try something like this? I think it would be pretty cool to have one of these to track my activity level during the day, especially to help motivate me to go out and be a bit more active.
How does the accelerometer work though? How would it respond to something like hockey? Biking? Baseball? I'm not convinced that it can accurately measure how many calories I burn.
I bike a lot in the summer, and it would help me a lot if I could use one of these to track my status and help me push harder.
But I do a lot of lifting too, and I have no idea how it would track that.

basically tracks arm movement, so useless for something like biking. this was also one of the main problems with the jawbone up, as some activities it was pretty much worthless. (but the Jawbone Up was plagued by many other issues)

Nike+ and Apple are going to be releasing something with more features than this. Jawbone tried with their bracelet, but pulled it after a few weeks.

It measures the acceleration of the limb to quantify energy output. Unfortunately it's pretty useless for lifting.
It's pretty hard to quantify your calories burned in those activities short of using doubly labeled water in a lab.

Wouldn't a higher end heart rate monitor work better? Polar has some pretty good ones.

I would go with that if you don't mind wearing a HR strap. Plus the high end ones have GPS for running/cycling tracking which I think is an awesome training/motivational tool. The downside is the price.

I don't really mind the strap at all. They all have them, right? Just having an accurate number for calories burnt and HR at any given time would be well worth it.
The Polar F11 was $180 back in the day when I originally got interested in this kind of stuff. I don't think they make it anymore though.
Considering how much I bike these days, I should probably get one with GPS.

As with my earlier post, I find tracking various parameters to be easily the most cost effective tool anyone can integrate into their exercise regime. With lifting, this is actually quite easy. With biking, perhaps a heart rate monitor would be better. Then again, you could record: weather conditions, distance, slopes and inclines, obstacles. With this information, you could easily gauge performance laterally - the same route.
But once again, bringing a note pad into the gym while lifting is one of the single best tools I have incorporated into my workout routine. Looking back, I can't believe I went so long without it.
It isn't nearly as novel or fancy as the Nike fuel band or a heart rate monitor, but a notebook/pad can be just as effective without all the hype!

I have about 4 notebooks worth of notes that I took during lifting. I tracked everything for the longest time. It worked well, and I made a lot of progress with it. But I do a lot more outdoor stuff now, especially biking, and I need a way to track it that doesn't involve writing it down which is pretty tough while you're on the go.

Take a peek at Garmin too. Them and Polar both have really good options.

Costco has the garmin 405cx for $200. It's an awesome unit. My wife has this one. I use a garmin 705. I'm a big fan of garmin. I've used polars too. They're good units, but I don't think you'll get the same functionality as the 405

The 405cx seems about like what I want. I like the accurate calorie burnt count based on your HR.
Thanks!
