Article doesn't say why Cat is being placed on the Bereavement list but obviously its sad news for him. Gross has been recalled, it will be interesting to see how he does up with the Jays. Kid's got talent but hasn't impressed me in his time on the big club.

He did have a very good spring but its a different game when you face MLB caliber pitching...do you think he will see much time? I would assume that Reed Johnson will get most of the playing time. Although they could play one of them as DH but my guess is Hill will play 3rd and Hillenbrand will be the DH.

Reed seems to not do as well against righties so I can see Gross getting there in those situations. I think he'll get a start or two so the Jays can assess how far along he is. To be honest - I think is a guy we'll see the Jays move sometime this season for an arm. He's a good prospect but the Jays are very deep in the outfield and Gross seems the best guy to move right now.

Yeah I don't know what that means either. Is it a personal-type thing, like a death in the family etc?

It's a seldom-used designation that's very similar to the disabled list, which allows a team to add another player to their 25-man roster. Unlike the DL, which is for a minimum of 15 days, BL is for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days - in other words, a special exemption that allows a team to replace a player who needs to leave the team following a death (and I assume there are qualification rules - sibling, parent, close relative, etc.).

Due to its nature, it is not used very often and some teams don't bother to fill the roster spot with a call-up. But it comes in handy when a team only carries 4 outfielders, like the Jays.

Gross has really struggled in Syracuse, btw... he hit his first home run since spring training this past weekend.

Thanks for the explanation re: bereavement list, Aaron. That definitely clears things up.

And as far as Gross is concerned, maybe this will do him some good. Nothing like a call-up to the majors to boost the ol' confidence a bit eh?

Here's Reeds split stats. All-Star Calibre OF vs. LHP, barely acceptable OF AAA numbers vs. RHP.

But that being said Reed hasn't been very bad vs. RHP this season, they'll probably give him some time, but any sign of dropping off and Gross will step in.

I think the Blue Jays will continue the same rotation with Reed and Gross. Reed will start against LHP and Gross against RHP. Gross does have power so the Jays will want to see what he can do.
