Default [Bump] Let's talk about coffee machines

The home kind.

Mrs. Ironhorse and I are considering a Tassimo-style single cup coffee machine for at home. I am the coffee and cappuccino drinker, and my wife would use it primarily for chai tea latte's. The last time we had a coffee machine at home was the old percolator 12 years ago, and a lot appears to have changed in the coffee apparatus world since then.

I would appreciate CP's feedback on what kind and brand of single serving coffee machines they like.

How much are you looking to spend?

I've got the Cuisinart SS700 and love it.

I prefer to grind my own beans, takes all of 45 seconds to do, but I could see the appeal of single serving machines I guess if I didn’t drink as much coffee as I do.

I think if I were to get one, I’d figure out what style of single serving machine my office uses, the same as I do with the toilet paper

That’s pretty cool that it comes with a reusable K-Cup so you could use your own coffee - neat way to get a Timmies fix when you want to slum around coffee wise

+1 for a Keurig system.

We've had ours for about two years now. I was really skeptical at first but I have to say I LOVE it now. No more wasted coffee, every cup is fresh and I find that you can get a lot more varieties of coffee from Keurig vs the other coffee systems.

Our machine is just the basic model (will probably get a more fancy version if this one ever dies . . . more cup size options):

You can get basic flavours in various stores around the city but I found the best place to get the coffee is right from their website. Tons of flavours, they also have great seasonal flavours (I'm enjoying a Pumpkin Spice right now). They also have some decaf coffees that are water processed instead of chemically processed. The customer service is also top notch, they once sent us the wrong 5 pack and when I called they not only apologized but told us to keep the wrong one they sent and gave us a coupon to order two free 5 packs shipping included. The other nice thing about ordering from the website is that you earn points that you can use towards free coffees or discounts off of machines.

Some of my favourites: Pumpkin Spice, Dark Magic (and Dark Magic Decaf, my everyday coffees), Macadamia Nut, Rainforest Nut, Spiced Mayan Chocolate, Wild Mountain Blueberry, German Chocolate Cake, Cinnamon Pastry, Kahlúa, Pecan Praline . . .

Edit: Plus you can use your own coffee too, you just need the filter insert

Wow that looks incredible. It's on sale now for $180! I might just buy one for my parents. Instant hot water, ice-beverage setting (what's that?)... but seems really cool. Christmas shopping!

I like our Keurig for ease of use and cleanliness. I hate not being able to use my own coffee though. The reuseable K-cup is great if you like most of the grounds going in your mug and most of the liquid going all over the floor.

I usually drink a pot a day when I'm on days off, which with a Keurig is a little pricey. I can brew a pot of Kicking Horse for less than a cup of the Keurig. It is nice in the mornings though to just toss the cup in and not fiddle with filters or anything else.

Do you have the case for the reuseable filter? I've never had a problem with grounds going into my mug or liquid spilling.

For those who have the Keurig, check out www.singlecup.ca. They're a local distributor, and the coffee selection is way better than the ones you can get through Future Shop, Costco, or Home Outfitters.

Sure do. Doesn't matter how coarse the grind or how little i fill it, it comes out the top of that thing, and all around the sides of the Keurig.

Sounds to me like your exit needle may be plugged. Take it apart and clean it.

I'll take a look but I'm doubting it. I had only used the machine for about 5 cups before I tried the reuseable cup. I checked online and it appears to be a common problem.

I'll take a look at the needle on the weekend.

I used my Shoppers Optimum Points and purchased a Tassimo machine a few weeks ago for $10. I love it! I just wish they had a K Cup reusable filter but I use the machine basically for special occasions and use my old coffee maker during the week except when I am in a rush then a will make a cup of Nabob Breakfast Brew which fills a standard travel mug.

+1 on the Tassimo. I've had mine for about 5 years and it still works like a charm. The coffee is Nabob so you know it's good. The cappucino is awesome, and after 12 of them you get quite a good buzz. The teas are good too and there's a pretty good selection of brews to try out.
I think i'll have one right now!
