Its on the outside of the elbow, not on the point of the elbow (the fluid that is)
Bursitis usually see's a gathering of fluid over the bony part of the elbow, maybe you have tennis elbow from a lot of repetitive strenous elbow activity if you know what I mean.
Probably your doctor is gonna jam a monster needle in there and drain it.

Last night I woke up at around 2am and my elbow was very sore and felt like I had just fallen on it the other day. It also seems like there is some fluid underneath the skin right on the outside of the elbow.
Anyone have any idea what the heck happened? Is this some kind of bursa sac thing? I have an appointment with the family Dr on Thursday - until then I'll try icing it - unless anyone else has any thoughts.

Sounds like you have bursitis... you should go to the ER just to check nothing else is damaged. Thursday is a while away. Get an x-ray done.

can you walk into the x-ray shop and get one without a requisition from your doctor?
Anyways, this is the elbow of my dominate hand - I recall seperating my shoulder of this hand years ago, I thought I was going to go crazy waiting for it to heal sufficiently to resume normal activity........

Septic Bursitis probably if you have warmth in the swollen part and tenderness as well. Just had it last month and had massive doses of antibiotics for ten days, then about another week before the swelling completely abated.
If no warmth, then it may just be regular bursitis that will resolve on its own.
I heard stories about them draining the bursa, but they never did that for me. Had visits to Walk in and SCUCC and got two different antibiotics in three days to kill it though.

I have chronic patella tendonitis....essentially tennis elbow of the knee. It happened due to a knee on knee hit that tore my LCL and the tendonitis sort of went undiagnosed or ignored as it wasn't thought to be the important injury so it became chronic while I attended to the LCL injury. Having now been to a specialist and done what physio can do I'm left with a knee that by and large is just fine and I don't notice any discomfort. However, every now and then for no apparent reason the tendonitis will flare up and will pretty much stop me from doing anything beyond easy walking for a couple of days. A bit of fluid build up and of course inflammation of the area accompanies these flares up.

Does it look like this?
That's me in a Chinese hospital, with an infected bursa caused by one of the last rugby games I ever played. It felt like I had a boob on my elbow, which was kinda cool.

Red means you are in the beginning stages of infection. Don't do what I did and let it get so bad that your entire arm goes all squishy, and you have to go on an antibiotic IV for a week. It's probably not life threatening (yet) as mine took about 7 days to turn into the infected mess you see in the photo.
Likely you have something floating around in there, and it's causing irritation. I had all kinds of crap in my elbow that had to get removed (when I say removed I mean cut open over a garbage can and drained). Ice it to get the swelling down, and hopefully you can get away with an oral antibiotic (if it is infected). Doctors won't typically drain it unless they have to here either, so you have to let it drain naturally.
Oh yeah, as tempting as it may be, don't pop it yourself.

Im not a real doctor but i used to watch one on TV.
Heres my theory/diagnosis:
Your original injury created a partially dislodged sliver of bone, then rolling around in bed separated it. You are now enjoying the results. If you think this is brilliant you can send money to ..........

No, I think you should consult a real TV doctor for that one.
