The most entertaining fight was between Swole Mbedzi and Thuso “Ngwazi” Ramukakati. Swole was declared the winner. In the junior catergory, Pfunzo Mbedzi and Mbulungeni Mudau were the first to enter the ring. The referee was forced to stop the fight in a bid to save Mbedzi’s life.

Fist fighters battle during the Musangwe, an age old tradition where men and boys display their fighting skills, at Gaba Village in Limpopo province December 22, 2011. The annual Venda fist-fighting run by community leaders, attracts hundreds of men who engaged in several weeks of bare-knuckled amateur fights in front of screaming audiences in the area. The sport, which began three centuries ago among young bored farmhands of the Venda tribe, attracts scores of spectators who often walk miles to cheer their favourites under the searing summer sun. The first rule is that there are no rules. For the bare-knuckle combatants competing in Musangwe fights, anything goes. You can head butt or knee your opponent, beat him to a pulp or even put a curse on him. The sport, which dates back centuries, has become a South African institution. Any male from the age of nine to ninety can compete. We follow a group of fighters as they slug it out in the ring. Who will be this year’s champion?

Im still reading about this Musangwe but it sounds pretty barbaric considering western standards of *sportsmanship*
