Default Wine

So,

Looking to pick up the ladyfriend and the family some wine for Christmas. Normally I don't buy wine so i'll need CP's collective taste buds and some recommendations for good wine.

She likes red while my family prefers white.

Thanks guys!

Happy Holiday's as well.

I don't really drink wine but sometimes when I do its something called Roodeberg (I don't remember spelling) from Superstore.

Chardonnay

  1. Women like it and tend to warm up after drinking it. Men to calm down after!
  2. Easy to find
  3. cheap, expensive....it is the least worry. Every wine drunkard likes it. Savory!
  4. Will she know? Good wine more than likely has nothing to do with the price. Famous regions are overprice!
  5. good times
  6. Just drank a Chardonnay and it was gud....

For red, if she likes the more full bodied reds, go with an Australian shiraz, something in the 15-20 dollar range will be nice. Wyndham estate bin 555 is a nice one.

I don't drink white much, but pinot gris is a nice variety that is nice and crisp, not oaky like some chardonnays. It is fruity whithout being too sweet.

As with many things, wine is quite subjective. What I would recommend is to buy something on sale in your price point. You generally get good value this way. Co-op usually has a great deal on a couple wines. Also, Costco & Superstore tend to have good prices. Or go to a big store when they have a bunch of samples (e.g. Willow Park on a Saturday) and buy whatever tastes good to you.

The bottom shelf is usually where the real bargains are. Go for those.

Just don't buy ginger ale from the liquor store. Ridiculously overpriced.

I'm a fan of non Chianti Italian reds, Malbecs, and Syrah/Zinfandels.

Full bodied and dry, the best.

For the red I've got to throw in a vote for Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Savignon. Not a white drinker at all so I can't help you there.

For reasonably priced reds I like Argentinian Malbecs, Spanish Tempranillo or a nice Shiraz/Syrah.

You should be able to find it, but Sledgehammer was a decent wine for 20 bucks.

Anything from Mission Hill in Okanagan, but most specifically the Q I think it's called. Road 13 also makes some good wines from the Okanagan. Lots of good wines actually.

Best advice- go to Willow Park or even a Coop/ Highlander. They have some ads/help posted near the wine bottles, and depending on the store, the staff should be quite helpful as well.
