Default Could Firefly be revived by Netflix?

Hmm. Hmmmmm. HMMMMMM. tiny.cc/wnba9
This tweet from Nathan Fillion leads to an interesting article pondering the ability of Netflix to revive Firefly.

Netflix will be bring back Arrested Development... and that seems a more difficult task than continuing Firefly.

I think the most difficult person to get might actually be Joss Whedon himself.

Discuss.

I'll never understand the obsession with this show, and why fans just can't let it die.

But in any case, good luck.

Fillion is one of those stars who knows where he comes from and is probably one of the best celebrities at stoking the flames of his fanbase. Fillion is constantly referencing Firefly because it keeps him firmly placed near the top of the nerd pantheon.

There is almost no chance Firefly will ever be resurrected and even if it did I'm not convinced it would be any good (see Dollhouse for more details). Besides that, they killed the one likable character and dealt with the shows biggest mystery already. Firefly is done.

Whedon has just wrapped up filming "much Ado About Nothing" with a modern setting. Guess who got the lead roles? Nathan Fillion and Amy Acker.

Also has a smattering of actors from Firefly, Buffy, Angel, and Dollhouse.

The Reevers and River's history was taken care of, but one of the biggest mysteries of the show was Sheppard Book's backround. It was taken care of in the comic series, but I'd love to see how it would be handled in the show.

FireFly was a great show, damn I loved it. It could be brought back, Fox has shown twice now that it will allow it's property to be used by others, but it's a long shot.

Nathen Fillion needs to hit the gym though, he's gotten a little pudgy from his Captain Tight Pants days.

Book worked for the government as a secret agent/assassin, or was some sort of modified human. I never really thought it was a mystery and Book is far more interesting if you leave him at vague details.

Note: haven't read the comics, I like my version of Book

Fans wouldn't let Star Trek die either. Result was four additional series that aired for 25 seasons and 11 movies.

Unfortunately for FireFly, the movie already tied up the storyline and removed some of the best characters. They would have to do a Highlanderesque retcon, but that would leave the show as only a shell of itself.

Fans would just need to accept a little change. In the first episode River, Simon, and Book were just guests on the ship, I don't think it would be too weird to suggest that lots of interesting characters come and go from the ship. Also gotta think there is a lot of cool stories out there for the crew then just River's backround and how the Reevers came about.

Chiwetel Ejiofor as The Operative was my favorite character from the Fire Fly saga, and he wasn't in the TV show.

Possibly. But which direction would you go?

You could move back in time - that would allow Wash and Shepherd back but eliminiate Simon and River. Or could move forward but that still eliminates Simon and River as it is unlikely they would remain onboard a smuggler's ship without the need to run/hide. (They could, but the plot device would be a stretch).

You could build basically a spinoff based on Mal and Zoe, but I'm not sure it could retain the charm the original series had.

I'm a huge fan of the show but after 10 years since it was originally filmed and killing off a couple of the more interesting characters in the movie, I think trying to revive it at this point would only disappoint fans.

If anything, why not recast the show and try it again? If it was cast properly it could be done well. It wouldn't need to be a character for character remake but the universe the show takes place in is very interesting and could hold its own against other science fiction.

I'd rather they didn't bring it back, it was a great show with strong writing, strong characters and a strong supporting cast. It had good story lines, but it was screwed over by the network.

The movie I thought was really well done, but Whedon made a point of killing off a lot of the characters that you could argue would have made interesting back stories.

They solved the Reaver mystery, and "The Operative" who was a brilliant character brilliantly acting even plainly stated that he wouldn't be seen again.

I just don't think there's anywhere else to go, they explored Mal's role during the war, and Book should remain a mystery (Why did he have that high level government card)

Just let it stay resting with fond memories.

Reviving it would be like trying to revive Angel, both shows had a hard ending.

There is so much more a show can do with the "space cowboy" theme but they would be banking on the Firefly name to draw an immediate audience (that has pined for it for 10 years) more than anything. Even a reboot with just the Firefly name would probably have a similar effect.

While the original was a very ensemble show, I could see Nathan Fillion being the only one to return, many years having gone by and with a new cast and new ship and it would still draw that audience. Some pretty ladies wouldn't hurt.

They should just do a show of Summer Glau eating popcorn on a couch, I could probably watch that all day, at least til she put on 60 pounds.

You keep going in the direction the show was going. Smuggler ship, going from job to job, trying to stay off the radar and get by as best they can.

Sure, they've lost some crew members, but that doesn't mean they won't add some, and lose some more I'm sure. The heart of the show is Mal and the ship. They established at the end of Serenity that the Alliance is weakened but not dead. Malcolm Reynolds and his ship are still out there, flying round the 'verse, doing heists and the such.

If FireFly returns I will cry, cry like a hungry hungry baby.

What they need to do, is add a 7 foot tall furry co-pilot to the crew to be Mal's right hand man. Maybe, he doesn't speak english but communicates in a bunch of chirps that only Mal can understand, and he responds with smart a%% remarks like "You said it pal" and "Your breath smells like cat food buddy"

Meanwhile they decide to stop for a couple of drinks on the remote jungle planet of Platooey 7 or 8 or something. They manage to pick up some passengers, maybe a punk teenager with a inferiority complex, a black preacher from a radical sect of the Church of Scientoloy (A religion made illegal several decades by the central government). and two plucky dogs, one of which speaks english in a Albanian accent, the other one just barks and poops constantly.

For episodes hilarity ensues for several episodes as they struggle to deliver a pizza to the world of Alder . . . Alder . . . .screw it Sam. But they arrive too late as the evil central government under the Command of Admiral Jane are blasting the world with the Song "Man called Jane" over and over again to force the planets leader, a young Queen named Queen PadaLeia to surrender to the emp . . . . central government.

The new crew eventually rescue the princess only to be cornered by the Central government fleet under the Command of Admiral Jane who blows the ship out of existance killing every one on board.

The last scene shows Admiral Jane polishing his favorite gun while babbling about the State of Florida or some other nonsense.

I don't see it happening. The article is a "what if" piece and has no substance. Wash and Book are dead, Fillion has his own show as does Morena Bacorin (sort of).

Adam Baldwin is free though now that Chuck is cancelled.

A Firefly show based around Jayne (before he met Mal) would be watchable.

I wouldn't even worry about the characters dying off, just bring them back and start the series on a new story arc of Book's past, like Serenity didn't happen.

Only Star Trek nerds obsess about continuity.

Chuck is cancelled? Or is this just the last year. And I doubt that Baldwin will be free for more then 5 minutes after he's done with Chuck.

He's stolen the show in Chuck, Firefly and Angel and is considered to be a very good character actor.
