Question Shower Remodel (In Calgary)

Hello,

I am in need of a new bath tub as mine is starting to crack. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good plumber or someone that does bath tub renos. We had bath fitters in but there quote is behind insane. We also went to Lowes and there quote came in at about 2800. They contract out to Pete the Plumber so im guessing thats why it is so expensive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I don't live in Calgary so I can't make a good recommendation, but I had a similar experience to yours at Bath Fitters and/or Lowe's. Mine was at Totem. My wife's uncle went through totem to have some bathroom renos and they were happy with the process and told us to do the same. So we went to Totem to inquire about developing a bathroom which was currently a storage room that was roughed in for a bathroom. They quoted almost $8000 but still missed a couple of things on the quote. We thought it was too much and found a contractor who quoted $4000. The job is almost done and coming in about $300 less than that. This guy used to do contract work for Totem but took his work elsewhere when he found out how much Totem was charging. The materials where close in price but the labour is where the huge difference was.

+1 to Surferguy. He didn't do a bathroom remodel for me, but did other work for me and I'd recommend him. Great guy, timely, and does good work.

Yeah its crazy the price differance, Lowes was half the price of Batt Fitters. A tub alone only costs about 400-500 so I find it hard to beleive that a plumber can charge about 2200 just to install the tub since the plumbing is already there.

I echo fundmark's statement. More then fair, for sure. Great communication as well.

He is super expensive!

Thanks for the recommendations guys!

I try my best to build unique spaces while keeping the clients needs in mind, the budget reasonable and make a dollar at the same time. A lot of these builder types will charge out at fixed price then sub contact for much lower fixed price. Then you end up with a supervisor who is never on-site and a guy who is rushing to finish this job to get to the next so he can make more coin. Accountability can get lost pretty quickly in that shuffle.

I do the work myself (outside of plumbing) so that I am confident with the final product. When the plumber is in I am usually there to make sure things are completed the way they are supposed to be.

The last shower I did, the plumber cost approx 475 to install a basic tub as well as hook up the shower regulator/plumbing etc. You should expect to pay approx 200-250 for a basic Delta shower regulator and approx 275-300 for a basic acrylic tub.

I prefer tile as I feel the finished product has a better return to it than the plastic tub surrounds.

RE: Lowes

2800-3000 would be in line for replacing the tub, new shower regulator (fixtures), vapour barrier, concrete board, water proofing, tile at ~7.50 sq/ft and tile install assuming you have a standard sized tub and room height. Perhaps that is what they were quoting at Lowes?

Examples of my work at my website in the sig below.

Feel free to contact me anytime.

Just checked your site. Great work!

I am planning on doing a front patio in spring time with a half-wall fence privacy screen. Would this be something that you can do? I see in your custom work section that you have built some outdoor stuff.

Thanks red sky!

I have done some outdoor work, but I must admit it is not specialty. Keep me in mind for the spring and I would love to be able to come and have a look at it to see if I would be able to handle it. If not I could pass you along to a couple of friends who may be better suited depending on the scope.

All the best

Plus I know where he lives and we can beat him up if he decides to change his high moral ways and become sleazy!

Thanks a lot. I am glad to hear you have a couple of people that you could recommend for a job as I don't really know of anyone. I just want someone that does a good job, isn't too expensive, and is trustworthy! Is that too much to ask? Haha.

Anyways, I also was thinking of doing some built ins around my fireplace and perhaps retile it as well. Would this be something you are comfortable with?

Sorry for the massive derail!
