Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen on Tuesday announced plans for a new space travel system that would use the largest airplane ever built to launch rockets carrying cargo and eventually humans into space.
"It will keep America at the forefront of space exploration," Allen told reporters.
In a collaboration with aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan, Allen's new company Stratolaunch systems aims to build a massive carrier aircraft that will tote a multi-stage booster rocket built by U.S. company SpaceX.

We might want to hold off on putting anything into space as long as that Klingon Warship is orbiting Mercury

Uh oh, avgeek boner!

Finally Burt Rutan will build a plane as large as his mutton chops!

This aircraft will join exclusive company as one of 3 types of aircraft currently flying with more than 4 engines. Right now that list is the AN-225 and the B-52.

Looks more like the Cylon Basestar that left to explore the galaxy at the end of the re-imagined series...

Good to see the private sector get involved. Another one of the things Obama did right that is flying under the radar.

In this situation (i.e. Space Travel), why wouldn't they? I could see how a nation would be interested in Space Exlporation but not Space Travel.

Wasn't there a limit as to how far private spacecraft could be launched? I do believe that was extended to something like 93 miles by the Obama administration.

I could be wrong though.

There are some other things he changed as well that make it more viable for companies like SpaceX to get involved with NASA for both space exploration and space travel.
