So what's the traffic like going to work? Will I be able to do the park and ride at the dalhousie c-train? Or do I have to be there at ungodly hours to find a spot?

Yup. You need to be at dalhousie super early to get a spot. Or you can catch the express downtown. However you have to pay an extra $0.50 each way on top of regular fare. (Dont get me started on that one) As for driving it will be a mess for the next couple of years with all the construction. Crow/Sarcee Interchange then Stoney/Crow i/c, Stoney/CountryHills i/c then Crow/Nosehill i/c. 16th Ave/Stoney i/c. It will be awesome when it is done but a headache until then. It takes me anywhere from 25-45mins to drive right downtown depending on what time you leave.

It's painful, and will continue to be painful for the next two years while the LRT is under construction. You problem is twofold, getting by Stoney/Crowchild and Nose Hill / Crowchild. Both are getting interchanges now but the construction zones will be troublesome until then. On average it'll take you 10-15 minutes to clear those two intersections in the winter if you left your house at 7:15. If it snows, make it 30 minutes.
It all depends on what time you go to work. Go in for a 7:30 or earlier start time and it's not so bad. Go any later and you'll be out of luck for a parking spot. I'd personally just drive to the Brentwood park and ride, spots in Dalhousie are tough to come by, Brentwood is much bigger.
Other than the rush hour, it's otherwise a pretty good place to commute from, other than the raw distances involved.

Thanks for the info guys. I work downtown, and I will be moving to Rocky Ridge soon, so it's good to gauge how traffic is going to look like.

There is also the option of heading up to the new sections of Country Hills Blvd (if you live near the top of the hill - it extends all the way to 12 Mile Coulee Road now) and take that to a connector (Sarcee/Shagganapi/53rd/Brisbois/etc) back over to Crowchild further down past the construction.
If my commute now takes longer i am blaming all of you reading this thread.... :P

This morning I left my house at 7:40 and I was downtown at 8:10 (took crowchild). During the University year its not quite as fast. If I leave earlier, I don't take crowchild.
As for park'n'ride, if you go to McMahon its the fastest way to do it.

Agreed, that's the backdoor route not many think about. Stoney to 16th to McMahon.
I hate Country Hills Blvd with a passion. Damn thing should have been built up like John Laurie. Instead, they built it like 36th in the NE with minimal setbacks and no room to expand intersections. Too many red lights and intersections to commute on IMHO, unless you jump off onto Sarcee right away.

Same thing on the way home, cut down Home Road by Market Mall and slip through Bowness to Stoney Trail and bypass the Crowchild construction... that route works well when exiting out the back of Brentwood or the University....
I hate Country Hills blvd with a passion too, but before Shagganappi is much better then after (East).

I take 16 ave/Stoney home from the University as opposed to taking Crowchild. It seems like it should be longer but the traffic flows better and it's a nicer drive with the river, parks and C.O.P. along the way.

Good call on the thread TCMB! My fiance and I bought one of those Blue Sky condos they are putting up. She works at Foothills Hospital so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm moving back in the new year, and I have no idea where I'll be working, but I can imagine with the LRT and everything, traffic is gonna be bad!

Then the billiard balls will drive you off the road.
What about the nimby's in Country hills who now bitch about the possible increased traffic that will go through their area after that new industrial area was approved. [/b][/quote]
Aw, but THOSE Nimby's lost their fight!!
If they had won and needed industrial density planned decades ago was abandoned i would be complaining about them too!
Sunnyside/Kensington losses out long term though if you ask me. Kensington has totally stagnated - probably the least development of any major area over the last 4-8 years. I walked Inglewood on the weekend (where NIMBY's don't rule - and even encourage development) and was VERY impressed by what has happened and what is planned..... better then Kensington now IMHO, and with a few big condo developments it will only continue to build...
Garrison Woods is another example of a community surpassing Kensington as a place to live, with the Beltline, Vic-park, CFB-west, and The Bridges all showing promise to do the same over the next 10-20 years.

I don't think you're getting the NIMBY idea. It isn't about discouraging other residential/comercial developement that has been prevalent in all of the communities you have mentioned, it is about he Industrial developement that does not bring residents into an area. New condos/shops, fine, new factory, who wants it. The developement that Fotze is talking about is INDUSTIAL, something that generally doesn't improve property values, and won't be seen in Kensington anytime soon.

Sunnyside/Kensington NIMBY's are legendary in planning circles! They are the best of the best (at being NIMBY's) in Calgary.
They have managed to more or less close off EVERY street in their communites minus what would be considered ABSOLUTELY necessary. They have managed to get the lowest possible residential zoning in the inner city (R4 i think) that effectivily prevents anyone from building a major project in the area, and they are so picky about design standards that no one wants to bother going through the process of building or even upgrading their commercial property just to have it thrown back in their face for 'not being good enough for Kensington'.
They even almost managed to keep the LRT from going into the NW! Luckily on that front they finally lost and it was pushed through, arguably the only battle they have lost.

Not In MY Backyard'ers = NIMBY's
Those people that want the city to grow and prosper, just not anywhere near their house because change for the city if good but for them is bad.
They want the benefits (growing economy, new jobs, art scene, cool shopping, good roads, etc) but NONE of the cost (new roads, transit, or buildings near their domains).
IE: "I moved to Kensington/Sunnyside in 1977 and this is how it was and this is how it will stay..." etc...
Calgary is especially bad (Behind Vancouver though - for different reasons) because so many people want space and the 'country style life' and don't seem to have come to grips with the fact that a good city is a dense city - it is the very nature of urban life. Further, so many people make enough money that they feel entitled to whatever they have at the expense of everyone else. Simply put, there are not enough poor people to boss around like in some cities or in years past... lol....

After 42 years in or around Sunnyside I have to admit the community got real political and infleuntial but were never effective in retaining the neighbourhood.
LRT was a huge battle and in the end what is,is. Safeway? Have you ever parked underground there?
They quit building in 67-69 because of a false economy and left these apartments empty and windowless. The association realized how important they could be and eliminated the hockey rinks ,blocked of Hillhurst and grabbed some power.
In Sunnyside now,we have one very small volunteer outdoor rink ( where I won many Stanley Cups may i remind you),the other is a wood chip/log piece of ?place
(was a ball diamond too,and a long jumping sandbox, and a high jumping pit,and a soccer field, and another ball diamond.) and really nothing else.
We lost Memorial Drive to new trees so that stopped our football.
I can't hit fly balls, safely, to the kids in sunnyside, anywhere, that is sad.
Hillhurst has Riley park and the community, but sadly no hockey.
Is this a good community association or what?
Rocky Ridge ; go to cochrane S to #1 into calgary and then sarcee to glenmore
planning on elbow quickly downtown, oops Maybe ...
I am starting a mapping company ,you think that I might figure it out.
PM me I will give you the grief proof route
