Default Re-hosting a website...

My wife contracted a company to build and maintain a website for her home business.

recently she has decided that she doesn't want to do business with them anymore and wants to move her website to a different hosting company.

What does she need to ask for in terms of files and such from this company ?

And how do I ( i know it will me...) go about setting up the same website with a different hosting company.

Her hosting costs included web changes if she was unable to do it herself.

I would like to find something similar but with a different company.

Thoughts ??

There's a few items/variables at play here.
- Domain registration
- Web hosting
- Web maintenance/updates

Depending on how the site was built, who purchased the domain and what her agreement with the existing company was will all effect what you need to do.

Domain registration
Who purchased the domain? (EG: www.CompanyName.com) ? Did your wife purchase it herself through a registrar like godaddy or domains at cost? (those are just two, there are 100's of different registrars out there). Or did the web hosting company purchase it on her behalf? (not uncommon)

Web Hosting
You'll need to purchase web hosting & move the assets/files from her site over to a new server. This could be as simple as uploading HTML/Images/CSS files to a web server, or it could involve specific technology (PHP/ASP) running on the web server. It will depend how the site was built & if the previous company is willing to provide her with a copy to host elsewhere.

Most reputable companies will say "ok, here's your files, good luck", they may charge a minimal fee for a burned CD or admin time, but they generally don't care about passing along web files as they exist on the server. Some however are not as helpful.

Web maintenance/updates
This is a bit of a rub in that you mentioned it's tied into her hosting, there are many web hosting companies out there and there's no reason you can contract directly to them for your web hosting needs. But most clients whom arean't web savvy end up purchasing web hosting through a web design company who then purchases web hosting from a third party.

You're more or less looking for a new web/interactive shop to host/maintain your site as oppose to simply moving your hosting.

Having said all that, fire me off a PM with the domain name and I'll take a look and see what specific input I can give.
