Default Work Computer Issues

So my computer here at work is driving me crazy. We don't really have an IT department. I do a lot of the IT stuff, but this is beyond me as to what the issue might be.

Computer just freezes. It's been doing it more and more lately. I'll just be doing something, clicking somewhere and all of a sudden the keyboard and mouse will not respond. The system freezes and if I'm listening to music or something, it will stop freeze as well and sounds like a stuck robot or something.

Wireless KB and mouse...not sure if those might be causing the issue or not. It's a Windows 7 machine, 64-bit. I also get this prompt just about every time I login:

No idea what it is and restarting does not make it go away. It doesn't "always" come up though which is bizarre.

And, sometimes when I boot, I get to the Windows logo and it just sits there. I have to hard boot the machine, sometimes 2 or 3 times to get it to get past the Windows logo and to the login screen.

I've checked the temperature of the system and it appears fine as well.

Anyone have any ideas?

That prompt doesn't look quite right for a Windows update message - could you have a virus?

I have scanned with everything known to man and can't find anything.

From what I can find, the prompt is an Adobe updater prompt. I have since disabled the updater in startup to avoid this message. Not sure if it is related to the issues overall though.

Check event log to see which process is causing this issue. I think Warning or Informational could be found.

format/reinstall

seriously if you brought that PC to my desk that's what would be done. backing up user files/settings, wiping it, then re-imaging it is always faster than trying to troubleshoot these stupid gremlin issues

Does your computer have power, is it plugged in?

Have you rebooted your computer?

Other than that Turn off Windows Update service, I have just done something similar with 3 other computers that the WSUS was causing the computer to freeze.

Yeah, well, I might not be here that much longer, so I was hoping I could patch as best as possible before I'm on my way out

Funny guy. OK, I have disabled the update service. Hopefully that might have been it.

Could be the HDD as well. I had a drive give out recently and it was freezing at the windows startup screen and when it did make it past that, froze after I logged in.

Just defragging right now...26% fragmented...a tad high. Not sure if it's related, but I'm trying everything. Yes, I know, I could just format. See above...

Stuff like this is the main reason I always build my machines to the state I want them and then do a full backup. Then store that backup in a separate folder and create a new backup for your daily backups. Makes rebuilding a machine fairly trivial.

At work, I just use LTI, which is a bit more complex to set up, but doesn't really require anything special to run - other than a computer to share the files from, or a USB key large enough to hold all your install files. Rebuild time is about 2 hours on a slower machine but much less for a fast machine. The benefit of doing this is that you can easily add a new program to your task sequence as it becomes part of your standard build, rather than just restoring from a previously set up image.

Wrong icon, wrong dialog title capitilization style, wrong placement of Yes / No.

Message phrasing is sloppy. It fails 4 of 4 Windows Vista/7 UX guidelines for dialogs. I would say this is not a Windows dialog.

Could be an Apple dialog. Couple of Apple products on here...Safari for testing and of course the required QuickTime when you install anything Apple.

Anyway, I haven't been able to solve the Windows starting up issue, but the computer locked up again this morning and I think it is FireFox that was causing the issue. I use FF as my default browser and am in the browser all day. There was an update released today (8.01) so I updated and everything has been running smoothly since the update.

Could be a coincidence, not sure, but not locking up is a good thing. We shall see.

Issue seems to be caused by Adobe Reader Updater. Try this

Remove the AUtrans.xml file from the Documents and Settings\ [user name] \Application Data\Adobe\Updater folder.
