Default Painting Fibergass

ok - i'm hoping the cp brain-trust can help me out.....

i'm looking at buying a grille for my truck

the one i'm interested in has a fiberglass 'body' with chrome speed-grille inserts

i'd like the fiberglass part to be 'chromed'... is it as simple as buying a metallic chrome type of paint and just praying it?

thanks in advance

chris

A good primer is a must, but before that surface prep. 120 grit on the fiberglass, the first coat of primer, 400 grit, and another coat of primer, wet sand 800-1200 grit, primer, wet sand. Clean the surface well, and handle the fiberglass with latex gloves on.

Paint a light tack coat, another heavier coat as per the paint directions, wet sand, clean and repeat.

A good UV protection clear coat would work too.

That's how I did my last fiberglass painting project and it turned out well. There may be a better way.

Eeeesh. That is tough. You cannot get a mirror like finish out of a can, it is impossible. I would find out who does plasti-chroming near you. I believe fiberglass can be plasti-chromed, but it might be costly.

I would guess buying the factory chrome grill off what looks to be a '95 ish Chev, and then buying the aftermarket insert would be cheaper, and it would look exactly have you want.

Oh I missed that, chrome paint might be tough to apply. I have never used it.

Get some paint matched to the body and paint it that color.
