Rememberance Day Memorial on Memorial

Anyone notice all the crosses set up at the base of Crescent Heights hill? I saw flags on them but I'm not sure if there are names on them or not. Not enough for all the men and women who have passed, but quite a fair number.

According to the display organizer, George Bittman, each cross represents a soldier from Alberta killed in war time or during peacekeeping duties.

"We're wanting to show the public the number of people from Alberta that made that ultimate sacrifice," says Bittman.
This year, 2,700 crosses are being erected, the most since the project started three years ago.

Each cross bears a soldier's name, age, rank, who they served with and the date they died.

The project is funded by a private citizen, businessman Murray McCann, who never served in the military and volunteers install the crosses.

I'm glad they are doing this for a third year. They look amazing, especially with the spotlights in the dark.

Sounds like there will be two ceremonies on the 11th: one at the new memorial just west of the 10th Street bridge and also at the crosses.

same reason why you don't wear poppies all year long i'd imagine. if they're there permanently, they're just part of the landscape and ignored. put them up for a special occasion and their significance is remembered

It is freaking MEMORIAL drive. Besides the new plaza at 10th street, there isn't a ton about it that gives any meaning to it's name.

I think a plot of crosses, each representing a body somewhere in the earth on the behalf of all of us, is something that deserves a permanent spot along the road named in honor of those who have died for us.
